I’ve been thinking about the difference between our gay rights’ ethos in the 1970s and today’s LGBT “community”. We were a Liberation Front, pursuing radical change in society. That should have included a sound feminist analysis of how the patriarchy imposes gender roles./2
Today’s buzzword is not Liberation but Inclusiveness. Just think about that. How can an oppressed group fight for its rights and seek to oppose stereotypes if it has to be totally inclusive? It can’t. Inclusiveness is not a strategy but an abdication, a retreat./3
Just imagine if every Jewish group seeking to fight antisemitism in society were told it had to include Muslim people fighting Islamophobia. Collaboration is good, but only when both groups acknowledge not only common ground but where their rights and views may conflict.
