An amusing consequence of spending 25 years on the Internet is that the number of people/firms/projects you’re ambiently aware of is higher than most people’s model for how many it is reasonable to be aware of.

“Does anyone know X?” “Yes; *context context context.*” “How do you know that?” “HN thread in probably March 2010.” “Do you remember all the threads from March 2010?!?” “No but that was a good one.”

It occurs to me that my father is basically this but for the South Side of Chicago, effortlessly recalling extended kin networks and whose cousin went to high school with what city bigwig 40 years ago.
