I was asked to write a perspective on the potential use of CRISPR for genetic diseases/disorders. What came was very personal. It is not proscriptive. It is a perspective that I have now that I could not have had before

I'm just now seeing the other articles in this special issue on CRISPR. I now have to find a few hours to read. They all look so good! muse.jhu.edu/issue/41830

But a few stand out as being particularly interesting to me:
1. Who Goes First?
Deaf People and CRISPR Germline Editing muse.jhu.edu/article/748050
"...we propose an expansive view of human diversity that recognizes the value of genetic, linguistic, and cultural diversity to the future health of humankind"
2. The Existential Dimension to Aging muse.jhu.edu/article/748060

"I was struck by a line in a song by Dylan, "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." It still resonates with me, though its existential impact is much different and much harsher: "He not busy being born is busy dying."
3. How We Got to CRISPR
The Dilemma of Being Human

muse.jhu.edu/article/748048

"It argues for the benefits of human variation for individuals and communities and concludes by calling for an attitude of humility and restraint to guide the development...
"...and implementation of humane technologies rather than genetic manipulation technologies that aim to control future outcomes through present action"
Nothing gets by anyone these days...
