I knew Korean has a T–V distinction when addressing others formally/respectfully or familiarly/casually, but couldn’t intuit how that was being used in Parasite. Turns out it was as beautifully nuanced as everything else. reddit.com/r/movies/comme…
(More on T–V distinctions: enacademic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki… This is especially on my mind now as I was trying to explain to my son tonight how we used different verbs growing up depending on who we were speaking to, and how to intuit when to go formal in ambiguous situations.)
I still have a bit of a phantom limb thing happening with the parts of language that English lacks, just wishing I could use all the tools at my disposal. Untranslatable thoughts are like grief or nostalgia, just an ache you have to live with, rather than an itch you can scratch.

Very good analysis by Hunter of the totally broken interaction between tech & media. I’m probably one of the few who’s helped start multiple companies & written for major media, and the intellectual dishonesty of some major tech execs + VCs is the most toxic part of the dynamic.
And anyone who criticizes media for writing “clickbait” while ignoring that it’s the major tech companies who changed the economics of online publishing to a model *they wanted* is telling on themselves.
Rashmi is correct here, of course, but note who counts as an “insider”.

We spend $630,000 EVERY SINGLE DAY paying off people harmed by NYPD.
And now they’re threatening elected officials.
They also endorse a serial sexual harasser whose assault victims include his coworkers and one of his wives. This makes sense given the extraordinarily high rate of domestic violence committed by NYPD officers.

(I work at a company that helps people easily code together & instantly ship apps; obviously I think coding is a valuable and powerful ability. I think if we demystify code, we’ll reduce the tendency to try to solve complex social problems with software, which would be *great*.)

I start with asking when the first year canned dog meat was produced. When do you think it was? More importantly, what caused it?
It was 1922. The year after peak horse in the US. It was enabled by cheap horse meat from the slaughterhouses as people started using their cars for more things. Important: this was 10 years after the first cars. Initially, they were additive to the existing transport paradigm.

Last year a photo of this snippet was making the rounds on WhatsApp. It suggests, "al pi halatzah", that women and Amalek share the characteristics of starting fights and scapegoating others, and that's why Yisro brought Moshe's wife after he'd proven adept at fending off Amalek. Image
People wondered if this was a quote from a real sefer, as the content was shocking and RaMBAD sounds unfamiliar and frankly made up.

Well, it's very real.

It's from Derushei V'chiddushei Ha'rambad by R. Moshe (ben R. Aharon) Deutsch (1844-1931), rabbi of Salgótarján, Hungary. ImageImageImageImage
It also turns out that this is hardly a one-off "halatzah" that can be chalked off as a moment of levity in a serious sefer. From other segments in this work, it seems that R. Deutsch only meant that the connection to Vayikach Yisro was in jest, but otherwise he's deadly serious.
