If someone else’s tweet about Pete’s strained relationship with the Black residents of South Bend is the reason you’re unfollowing me, your first mistake was following me in the first place.
These folks’ hearts will be broken and they don’t even see it coming. Bless.
This is a consequence of certain voters placing the expressed concerns of Black and other marginalized voters lowest on their list of priorities for the duration of this primary but still expecting us to magically coalesce behind their fave for reasons that aren’t our own.
Y’all are fired up and ready to vote like a Black woman until a Black woman ain’t voting for your fave.
Y’all are here to listen until the second you hear some shit you don’t want to hear about your fave.
The reasons why aren’t for me to reconcile on your behalf, but I can guarantee you that none of them will stop people who aren’t you from having a lived experience that’s different from your own. You can’t project your wishlist onto people who are wishing for other stuff.
You have every right under the sun to stan your candidate as hard as you damn well please but don’t act brand new when what works on you doesn’t even register on the scale for someone else who has their literal right to liberty & personhood on the line in this and EVERY election.
It’s not my fault if your fave isn’t a reliable ally, they shoulda thought about that before they ran in the Democratic primary. It’s too late to get mad about the work your fave hasn’t done to court folk who aren’t you until now. We tried to tell Y’ALL.
Every time the issue of your fave’s experiential allyship (or lack thereof) comes up y’all are quick to whip out a link to a plan and hide behind it as if that fully answers the question or negates any other ugly parts of the conversation. The where you been still matters though.
If where your fave’s been involves some shit that you really don’t wanna talk about because it explains the real reason why Black voters haven’t jumped on their bandwagon this whole time, that’s not my fault either. The stringency of my vetting process is my choice, not yours.
When you click the follow button on my account you’ve accepted an invitation to join the stream of consciousness of my singular Black woman brain, it’s not my fault when it turns out that I’m not you. Don’t sign up for my truth if you can’t handle it.
Likewise, when you take it upon yourself to opine about what the Black vote is or isn’t gonna do while simultaneously disavowing every constructive critique we’ve made of your fave to this point, don’t be surprised when all that “race stuff” you thought wasn’t a BFD actually is.
Y’all already made it clear that what marginalized voters care about isn’t that important to you based on how you whittled down the field to this point, so it’s too late to pretend like hearing from us directly about your fave is just now becoming unbearable/not worth it for you.
You asked for a window into a world that you might still be too comfortable and fragile to even see for what it’s worth. That ain’t my fault either, and I’m still not impressed that you and your fave “didn’t know” how bad racism is in this country until they ran for POTUS. Bye.
If you a read a marginalized person’s take on this primary field and your 1st response is to caution against infighting/disunity rather than comb through the take for cues on how to be an intersectional/reliable ally and choose one before it’s time to vote, you’re doing it wrong.
I’m tired of watching y’all nervously declare that “Trump’s gonna win” when you see folk who don’t look or sound like you saying they aren’t gonna vote for your fave. The field still has umpteen ppl in it, you don’t have to catastrophize just b/c your fave isn’t our 1st choice.
Instead what you’re actually catastrophizing about is the reality that your fave may not become the D nominee once marginalized people have a chance to weigh in, stop putting the cart before the horse and your fave into the general election when we aren’t anywhere near there yet.
I hope y’all keep chanting “vote blue no matter who” to your own selves because it’s gonna come in handy if/when your fave isn’t on the stage after Super Tuesday. The receipts on how and why it happened will be here whenever you’re ready to face them...
