For those who have been asking: Yes, our open-access tool SHIFT (shift.cidma.us) can be used to estimate the costs of “Medicare for All Who Want It”. @YCIDMA
“Medicare for All Who Want It” maintains the same inefficiencies that make our current healthcare system so expensive.
Without savings to overhead, pharmaceutical costs, hospital/clinical fees, and fraud detection, “Medicare for All Who Want It” would cost $175 billion dollars more than status quo. That’s over $600 billion more than #M4A annually. @YCIDMA

This letter is not a good look. I am disappointed to see @TheOfficialACM as a signatory.

I'm not saying that publishers add no value, but "Americans need to lock up their science so the rest of the world can't benefit" is not the right argument.
I’ve really been trying to keep ACM out of my increasing “burn it all down” attitude re: for-profit academic publishing, but wow, way to side with the Empire.

Medicare STARS rating - lies. What does it mean? PCPs like myself, when in the insurance based world, were penalized if 80% of Medicare patients did not have a screening test. It says NOTHING about how good a plan is. /1
If 80% of my @Highmark female Medicare patients age 65-75 didn’t get a mammograms. I was penalized. Have to keep the ⭐️ 🌟 score above 80%! It has nothing to do with quality. /2
If 80% of all #medicare patients age 65-75 didn’t have their colonoscopy or other accepted colon cancer screening, I was dinged. Gotta force people to have testing or face having money withheld from my pay /3

2/ As we’ve mentioned, in many Indigenous knowledge systems, a person’s right to access certain information (especially traditional knowledge and customs) may be bound by specific, contextual permissions. #OpenGLAM
3/ Here’s an example relevant to the G in #GLAM: the proceedings from @_FPCC's Cultural Protocols & the Arts Forum in 2014. As the late Dr. Greg Younging said, “Protocols provide guidelines for behaviour.”

2/ #Openness & #access are inseparable & access is a core value of librarianship & the archival profession. In both the American Library Association @ALALibrary Core Values & Int'l Federation of Library Associations & Institutions @IFLA Code of Ethics access is @ the forefront.
3/ The ALA’s Core Values of Librarianship state that "all information...should be readily, equally, & equitably accessible to all library users." Likewise IFLA pinpoints Access to Information as the core mission of librarians & other information workers.

Thread alert! If you want to learn more in #disabilitystudies there are a lot of open access resources. Let’s start with Disability Studies Quarterly (dsq-sds.org), one of the leading journals in the field, which is 100% open access.
Other open acces journals include Disability in the Global South (dgsjournal.org) & Review of Disability Studies (with a delay: rds.hawaii.edu)
I personally link to my articles on my website & anything that is behind a paywall I put up as soon as I’m allowed under the publishing contract. I particularly recommend the convo between @JulieMinich, Jina B. Kim & me in the open access journal Lateral.
