Thread alert! If you want to learn more in #disabilitystudies there are a lot of open access resources. Let’s start with Disability Studies Quarterly (dsq-sds.org), one of the leading journals in the field, which is 100% open access.
Other open acces journals include Disability in the Global South (dgsjournal.org) & Review of Disability Studies (with a delay: rds.hawaii.edu)
I personally link to my articles on my website & anything that is behind a paywall I put up as soon as I’m allowed under the publishing contract. I particularly recommend the convo between @JulieMinich, Jina B. Kim & me in the open access journal Lateral.

Some folks like @JayDolmage have worked to get even academic monographs made open access. Check out his book on #AcademicAbleism here: quod.lib.umich.edu/u/ump/mpub9708…
I know that none of this fixes the inaccessibility of academia. I know reading alone doesn’t replace being in a classroom with a professor & peers. But I do want to make clear that folks in disability studies are actively, regularly fighting ableism & exclusion in the academy.
Many of my DS colleagues are disabled & fight for their own #access & accommodations. Many of my disabled graduate students get forced out or overwhelmed by the ableist assumptions & norms of this space. It is violent & painful at every level for disabled folks in #academia.
But by being here we in Disability Studies work hard to change it. We force our colleagues & administrators to reckon with disabled bodyminds out & proud in classrooms & lecture halls & sporting events & dormitories. It is slow. It is hard. But I am hopeful that it will pay off.
