/ @Bitwarden is an open source password management tool designed to be an easy and safe way for individuals, teams and organisations to store, share and sync sensitive data.
/ Why use a password manager? Reusing the same password to log in to different websites is poor practice. If the password for one website is compromised, those same login credentials are being used on other websites, leading to more of your accounts being compromised.
/ This is where a password manager comes in handy. You set a 'master' password - one password you remember to log in to your password manager. From here, all your passwords should be a random string of characters generated by your password manager.
/ These passwords are safely encrypted and stored in your password manager's account. To access your passwords, you can install an extension on your web browser whereby your login credentials are auto filled out. (Side note: don't install random browser extensions)
/ You can install your password manager's app on your phone and enable the accessibility options to automatically fill out your usernames and passwords on your mobile device as well.
/ I would recommend taking stock of all your online accounts and changing your passwords to the random string of characters generated by your password manager.
/ You can check if your email address or password has been compromised from previous known hacks. Visit haveibeenpwned.com to see how you're doing.
/ Why do I like Bitwarden? There are plenty of password managers out there. Bitwarden is open source, whereas some others may not be. It has also been through a security audit. You can find more details of that here. help.bitwarden.com/article/is-bit…
/ Here is why Bitwarden thinks you should trust them with your sensitive data. help.bitwarden.com/article/why-sh…
/ Transitioning over from your previous password manager to Bitwarden can be done easily. You can import data from another provider using the instructions found here help.bitwarden.com/article/import…
/ If you don't trust Bitwarden's servers to store your data, you have the ability to self host. I've been looking into the bitwarden_rs GitHub repository to do this. There are trade offs to going down this route. Be mindful of them. github.com/dani-garcia/bi…
/ There's also an ability to store credit cards and identity information such as passport, driver licence and tax file numbers. Remember, you are building a honeypot for yourself here, so be very careful with your master password.
/ You can take the security principles applied in Bitcoin as explained in this Coldbit blog post to create a master password. Remember that big 2048 word list? It's not only for your 24 seed words. coldbit.com/can-bip-39-pas…
/ Using a password manager is a net positive to your digital life. You don't have to remember multiple passwords, you only remember one and let the manager take care of the rest. Do your own research. Hopefully this thread gives you a few starting points.
