This may sound like a goofy thing to get hyped up about for a 40 y/o man, but @SPressfield just liked my photo of Leonidas' statue from Thermopolae.

The guy who wrote the book (Gates of Fire) that led me on my pilgrimage to the gates of fire.

Happy days.
When I left Special Forces, the guys from my ODA gave me a copy of Gates of Fire w/ their signatures & the inscription, "you're on our 300 list."
Meaning...well you've seen 300, you get it.

If you wanna see a (kinda) tough guy get choked up, that's how you do it.

Interesting things about China.

Did you know they joined the WTO (at the behest of USA) in December, 2001? 3 months after 9/11?

Not linking anything, but interesting timing - we kind of had a lot going on.
Bill Clinton started his presidency in 1992 by linking renewal of China's WTO "Most Favored Nation" status (meaning the US had to give China any concession we gave any other trade partner) with 7 human rights requirements.

But Bill rescinded that requirement a year later.

I wonder if his 1996 re-election campaign scandal showing that Chinese intelligence agents were illegally funneling money to Bill Clinton's re-election campaign had anything to do with his reversal:

The silver lining in this Corona virus debacle is that it’s finally opening many American’s eyes on the dangerous position we’re in having outsourced many products to China that could endanger our national security.

Being dependent on them for antibiotics is one thing, but most-
don’t know just how much of our military hardware & tech is manufactured, at least in part, by China.

For a great thought exercise on where this could lead, you should read Ghost Fleet:

The premise is that-
a USA dependent on Chinese manufacturing (check) had backdoors & malware inserted into much of our military operating systems, allowing China to essentially “flip a switch“ and render it all useless.

Calm before the storm. 5 minutes till night court starts. Start to my second work day. I'm in Brooklyn Criminal Court from 5pm-1am. As always, will do best to report from the front when I have opportunity. No idea how busy it'll be. Hopefully slow. Means less people incarcerated.
Fuel: Small coffee. Two splendas. Splash of half and half. Apollo Diner.
No cases yet. Which usually only means one thing. It’s going to get busy later. Often all at once. This is why I always bring laptop (to arraignments, but also to normal court days). Have to use every opportunity *at work* to work. And even then, inevitably spills over into life.

Y’all we need to have a conversation about how bonkers the Antebellum US really was. Today’s subject is Daniel Sickles, and man was this guy a piece of work.
Sickles rose to prominence after Fredericksburg, when he managed to avoid purges of the general staff of the Army of the Potomac by Fighting Joe Hooker in the wake of Burnsides’ departure.
Ultimately, Sickles will move without orders during Gettysburg and get his entire corps destroyed, losing a leg but inexplicably earning the Medal of Honor in the process. He spent most of the rest of his life trying to claim credit for Gettysburg.
