The Hoysala king at the time, Veera Ballala was given 2 choices by islamic barbarian malik kafur in return to spare the lives of the Hindus of the Hoysala kingdom. The choices being

After the fall of Yadavas of Devagiri & Kakatiyas of Andhra to kafur's islamic sword, Veera Ballala had little choice but to accept one of the offers given to him. He REFUSED to convert to islam. He chose to pay a zimmah instead. Gave away everything except his Yagnopaveeta (3)
But islamic butcher kafur wouldn't keep his word. His islamic hordes ransacked & plundered every single Temple in the Hoysala kingdom, even reducing the capital city Dwarasamudra to rubble. Such was the ferocity of plunder that Hindus were forced to abandon the city & flee (4)
King Ballala's son, Vijaya Veera Ballala was arrested & taken to Delhi as a war prisoner & subjected to torture by barbarian khilji. He refused to convert to islam

Meanwhile Veera Ballala would reorganize his forces at the holy Temple town of Tiruvannamalai & launch a counter offensive against jehadis. He'd fight valiantly till his last breath. In the process laying the foundations for what would go on to become the Vijayanagara empire (6)
Veera Ballala's unfinished task of uniting the remnants of the 4 former Southern Hindu kingdoms would be taken forward by Harihara & Bukka Raya, two brothers who had earlier served under Veera Ballala. They would liberate Dakshin Bharat from the scourge of jehadis by 1377 CE (7)
