ok, I listened to full podcast. I appreciate it's the first podcast in series but this one bothered me. Thoughts incoming but Sandberg had more propaganda and misleading unchecked narratives in the 50minutes than a few current Presidential candidates running ads on Facebook. /1
much of interview is soft stuff or focuses on Facebook as merely a PR crisis using words like reputation, hostile media, narrative, the perception, Levy's book "implies"... etc. maybe that was intention but very little difficult questions or pushback on misleading answers. /2
here are five examples.
1) arguably the most critical issue in spotlight today (Facebook's political ads policy) is set up as "without going too deep into it" (and doesn't) despite spending 20min on soft profile questions and gushing thoughts about her boss (this later). /3
Sandberg's entire answer on political ads focuses on free speech & public scrutiny of truth/lies with no challenge why Facebook hasn’t banned microtargeting (as Google has) which by its definition makes scrutiny more difficult as communities and individuals see different ads. /4
2) Sandberg is allowed to again retell the narrative of "the 2016 issue" - as Facebook was focused and successful in protecting against foreign actors hacking and stealing information and they "had a big operation preventing this." Yet what was SCL/Cambridge Analytica??? /5
It was a foreign political operator that propped up a company to "hack" and sell personal data for tens of millions of Facebook accounts. Facebook covered this up for years and even put Facebook employees in the same room to help them target ads in the 2016 US election. /6
3) Sandberg regularly describes users "choosing to share" their data with Facebook which ignores UK Competition and Markets report last month showing a majority of Facebook’s collection of data happens thru background tracking when users aren’t even using Facebook products. /7
4) I choked up my potbelly sandwich when Sandberg said, "We supported GDPR.” It's an amazing unchecked quote from a company who actively lobbied against EU privacy laws and has the most active investigations under GDPR (8 of 21 in their home country, Ireland). /8
5) Sandberg says they “definitely haven’t taken steps to consolidate into a family of apps to prevent a breakup.” This is false, Facebook moved on this just as the German Fed Cartel office issued decision to separate Facebook's data usage across its apps offering blueprint. /9
So to be fair...first podcast plus maybe a service to see how much Facebook still believes in its current toxic biz model under scrutiny by 48 state Attorneys General, DOJ, FTC, EU, etc. And a strong signal of loyalty from top lieutentant in FB autocracy affecting the globe. /end
