We find a robust trend toward increasing cool-season frequency and persistence of the "south-type" ridge in recent decades--consistent with increased occurrence of dry/warm winters over much of American Southwest in recent years. #CAwx #CAwater journals.ametsoc.org/doi/full/10.11… (4/6)

No sign of widespread/significant precipitation anywhere in California over the next 2+ weeks. Already large seasonal precip deficits will continue to grow, esp. across Norcal, as very strong and persistent northeastern Pacific ridge builds. #CAwx
In fact, much of the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes will experience anomalous ridging in the coming days. This hemispheric atmospheric mass displacement is a reflection of the presently record-strong positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation...

Complex and honestly pretty bizarre weather pattern shaping up for California over next 10+ days. First, widespread record heat possible this weekend/early next week. Temperatures into 80s and even 90s in some spots. #CAwx #CAfire (1/3)
Then, a slow-moving cut-off low will likely bring some showers & thunderstorms to parts of SoCal, including coast, and *eastern* slopes of Sierra Nevada. Still some model disagreement, but precip could range from trivial (GFS) to significant (ECMWF) there. #CAwx #CAfire(2/3)
Meanwhile, northern 2/3 of CA will stay dry despite this system to the south. Strong pressure gradients on north side of the low could drive strong northerly winds, possibly leading to another round of extreme fire weather concerns given record-dry vegetation. #CAwx #CAfire (3/3)

I'm seeing numerous--and presumably incorrect--news reports that #Guadalajara, Mexico received "2 meters" (6.5 feet) of #hail accumulation during a thunderstorm. While the photos do show extremely impressive piles of hail, there's lots of evidence in photos/video that... (1/n)
...these enormous #hail drifts are almost certainly the result of an urban flash flood during hail-producing thunderstorm, which washed huge volumes of hail ice from around city into culverts & low-lying areas. Ice floats, so it can go wherever floodwaters do. (2/n) #Guadalajara
There are numerous documented reports of very deep hail drifts due to transport by floodwaters. A spectacular example occurred in desert of New Mexico in summer 2003. During that event, flash flooding washed hail into "glaciers" 15 feet tall! wunderground.com/cat6/record-ha… #NMwx (3/n)

A thread on activating and raising US Army infantry divisions in WW2. (Niche I know...). It all takes longer than you probably think to raise a division in a war at maximum national effort. 1/20
In Dec 1941 there were 10 Regular US Army infantry divisions, 18 National Guard and 1 Army of the US for 29 in total. By 1945 67 infantry divisions would be activated, trained and deployed overseas. 2/20
In 1942 27 infantry divisions were activated. In 1943 another 11 were activated. The 1st to be activated was the 25th division in Oct 1940. The last to be activated was the 65th division in Aug 1943. 3/20

Come wasn’t anything other than what appears to be a hard working law student through school and clerked for several judges as a lot of Law Students do, nothing out of the ordinary. Joined the SDNY 1st as an investigator, and worked his was into the Deputy US Attorney eventually.
Worked on the takedown of the Gambino Crime family under the direction of Rudy Giuliani, Come toiled as a hard working prosecutor that showed a ton of promise, transferred to the EDVA & took down the Khobar Bombers. Up to that point in 2002 he looked to be the next up and comer.

NEW from me: An investigation into a school for troubled teens, where girls say they were punished for being gay or bi, pulled off anti-anxiety meds cold turkey, and had their diet limited to peanut-butter sandwiches when they wouldn't cooperate

I saw her scars.

Employees confirmed students are disciplined for self-harm
8 former students said they disclosed that they had either been sexually assaulted, or were abused by their parents, but the school failed to contact authorities.

Ex-employees said there's no training about "mandatory reporter" requirements
