Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah has stated in Parliament today that facial recognition technology is being used to identify perpetrators in the Delhi Riots investigation.

The facial recognition system has been fed data from Aadhaar, driving license and voter ID databases. The use of Aadhaar for this purpose without any judicial authorisation violates the judgement of the Supreme Court in KS Puttaswamy v. UoI (2019).
ICYMI, facial recognition technology was first acquired by the Delhi Police to identify missing children. In 2019, the system had an accuracy rate of 1% and it even failed to distinguish between boys and girls.

We had previously sent a legal notice to the Delhi Government in December 2019 about use of facial recognition technology against protestors without any legal basis or procedural safeguards.

Update: There are reports that the Home Minister did not mention Aadhaar in his speech and there was incorrect reporting by several media houses. We would request @AltNews @boomlive_in @FactCheckIndia to review the speech and do a fact check.
Even without integration with Aadhaar, serious concerns regarding mass surveillance remain, especially since the use of facial recognition technology in India is not governed by any legislative framework.
We had filed an RTI with the Delhi Police about their facial recognition system. In its response dated 20 Feb 2020, the Delhi Police stated that the system had not been used till then to identify individuals at protests or rallies but the system is clearly activated now.

Telecom operators collectively owe the Government close to INR 1.47 lakh crore in unpaid dues. Among others, Calculations of the DOT show that Airtel has to pay INR 35,586 crore and Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) owes INR 53,000 crore. 2/15
These figures are disputed by Airtel and VIL who claim that the amounts owed are around half of DOT estimates. The unpaid dues stem from license fees and spectrum usage charges. There are increasing risks that VIL may exit the market 3/15

The Good:

☑️Endorses the proportionality standard.

☑️Introduces procedural safeguards such as proactive publication, time limits and periodic review.

☑️Recognizes use of internet for speech and business as a fundamental right.
The Bad:

😕No direction for restoration of internet in Kashmir.

😕 Holds that reasonable restrictions can also mean complete prohibition.

😕Mischaracterises direct violation of press freedom as mere chilling effect.

#Breaking - Some defense sources report #Indian air strikes across the Line of Control in Muzafarabad, #Pakistan. Indian air force briefing expected later today. Pakistan said Indian jets dropped their payloads & "fled". More confirmation of details needed.
There are also reports of dual, air and ground Indian strikes in Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir. No official word yet. Waiting for updates. Stay tuned.

Breaking: Large terrorist attack in #India. More than 40 Indian Reserve Police Force personnel were killed and many others injured when Pakistani backed terrorists targeted a convoy with a car bomb at Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir's today, ndtv.com/india-news/15-…
Reports suggested that the vehicle used by the terrorists was a Mahindra Scorpio carrying more than 350 kg of explosives in what is the worst attack ever on security personnel in the state.
Sources said that terrorists triggered the car bomb while 78 vehicles with over 2,500 reserve police men were on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. The stretch on which the incident occurred had been sanitized in the morning & authorities called it a serious breach of security.
