On Monday, I thought, let's see what #covid19 quarantine looks like across the U.S.

The stories we heard did not fill me with confidence. (Thread)

🔶 One woman went to a wedding, heard a waiter tested positive, spent days trying to get info. Finally, state health dept told her she didn't have to quarantine. @mayatmiller called county dept, who said the banquet hall was supposed to tell all wedding goers to quarantine.

🔶 The CDC says travelers from Italy should self-quarantine for 2 weeks. @js_kaplan greeted a plane from Rome, spoke to 8 passengers, nobody had received this direction.

🔶 I spoke to the mother of a teen who came back from Italy, developed symptoms.
Pediatrician: Self isolate 2 weeks from doc visit
ER doc: Self isolate 2 weeks from start of symptoms
CDC: Self isolate 2 weeks from flight back

🔶 Then it got rather close to home. A conference that all 3 of us went to last week had an attendee who tested positive after leaving the conference. A @propublica editor who had close contact with that individual called 2 state departments...

One told him: you can go about your business (pump gas, go to the grocery store) so long as you stay 6 ft away from other people.

The other said: stay at home and isolate yourself from your wife & kids.

🔶Public health experts tell me there's still time to mitigate spread. "We need to be putting out clear and consistent messages to have a huge public health impact now,” said @megan_b_murray, professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
