I transitioned to fully #remote work ~1,5 years ago. Due to recent events lots of people find themselves unexpectedly in this position. If you work in #software, I’d like to share what I learned and seems to work. Thread below - 1/n
Never be alone for days - if you live with family, spouse, roommates (pets don’t count): awesome! If you live alone: make sure you have human interaction every day - hop on a call (with video turned on!) with other people and talk ~30mins about non-work related stuff. 2/n
In the beginning try to follow your previous work schedule. The freedom is awesome, but it’s best to just have the same schedule in the beginning (typically 9-5). Long term you can change this, but do not experiment in the first weeks. 3/n
As long as no other instructions are mode, go outside every day (avoid busy places). Go for a walk, or run if you are a runner, or do something else outside - try to leave your home once every day - assuming this is safe in your area. 4/n
Educate people around you that you !work! from home. If you live with other people, make sure they know the difference between “just watching YouTube” and “focusing on a hard problem” - for others, unless they look at your screen, the difference is not obvious. 5/n
Keep in mind, coworkers are probably also remote. Forget to make team decisions with 1 person or dropping a cryptic text somewhere-the team won’t know about it. Make decisions in a way that EVERYONE knows about it-write stuff down in a short and easy to understand way. 6/n
Make sure you properly document your stuff and people can easily follow your work. Forget commit messages with “fix bug” or “refactoring”, write “fix [x] issue that happens when [y] and [z] hold” 7/n
Going through code with 3-4 people is easier if you are remote and you can share your screen in a call than looking at a single screen with more than 2 people. Take advantage of this 8/n
If you find yourself being not productive in the first days, make a todo list - you can also drop that into slack (or whatever you use) so your coworkers know what you’ll do and can spot if you work on the same stuff. 9/n
If you manage a team and you realized that “woah, most of these would be also useful for non-remote” then… welcome ;) … 10/n
