Getting ready for a big day at the @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay! Follow the hashtag for updates throughout the day!
We’re ready for you at the @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay!

Thanks to all our lovely volunteers who help make this event possible.
And we’re off! @TimMcMaster_APD kicking off @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay with a huge shoutout to our sponsors and volunteers.
First up for the day at the @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay is Cheryl Steele talking about #diabetes and technology.
Cheryl walks us through the timeline of insulin pumps and CGMs. We’ve come such a long way! @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
CGM provides alarms to the person with diabetes around their glucose trends. Important to note that Freestyle Libre does not have alarms. People just scan the sensor to get a sense of their glucose trend. @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Important the healthcare professionals should support people with diabetes in making a decision around diabetes technology that best suits them. Not which rep sweet talks you the most. @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Let’s take it back to blood glucose monitoring first.

The first home blood glucose test kit was available in the 80s and has come a long way since then. Now we have meters that test for ketones and include bolus calculators as well. @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
NDSS subsidises test strips for people with type 1 for life. For people with type 2, they only get subsidy for the first 6 months from diagnosis. A form filled out by a doctor is required for further access to subsidy.

(Which makes no sense imho)

@DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
Plenty of apps are available to help people with diabetes with insulin dose calculations and carb counting @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
CGM subsidies are available for people with type 1 with a healthcare care card and women with type 1 who are planning for pregnancy, pregnant and 3 months post partum. #DiabetesUpdateDay @DAA_feed
CGM provides fantastic insights for people with Type 1 Diabetes beyond A1c and isolated finger pricks checks. It provides overall time in range to allow for pattern identification. @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
Important to work with the person with Type 1 to set up meaningful data that will help with diabetes management rather than creating distress and burden for the individual #diabetes update day @MonoChronica
Love Cheryl’s honest talk about where people with diabetes are accessing other data collection tools like XDrip and @Tidepool_org to help with their diabetes management #diabetesupdateday @DAA_feed
DIY is NOT pump hacking. Not changes made to insulin pump or cgm. The person with diabetes is just building an app that will allow the pump and cgm to communicate with each other. @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
Next up, we’re focusing on artificial nutrition and diabetes management within the hospital setting. @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
Important for dietitians to remember that stress, injury and illness can lead to high blood glucose levels and reduced glucose uptake/insulin sensitivity. This is even before we start talking about artificial nutrition @DAA_feed #diabetesupdatesay
Why is high blood glucose levels important in the clinical settings? This slide says it all.

Important to note that even people without diabetes can experience high blood glucose response to stress/illness @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Although high blood glucose is important to focus on, can’t forget about the management of low blood glucose levels! @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
Research and practice shows that diabetes-specific feeds do not improve glycemic levels in inpatients with hyperglycaemia. So best off using normal feeds. @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
However, it’s never appropriate to say or incite that if people with diabetes gastroparesis looked after themselves they wouldn’t be in this position.

Dietitians are supposed to be supportive and empower clients to choose the best care for them. @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
As part of the organising committee, we’ll do better in the future to ensure that speakers understand the importance of language when presenting. @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
After a lovely morning tea, we hear from @DAA_CEO’s message to @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay attendees around key updates from DAA and what they’re up to.
“We want to move away from being just a member organisation and to be health advocates” - @DAA_CEO 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

#DiabetesUpdateDay
And now @DAA_feed Vic board member @JemmaOHanlon giving us a more local update #DiabetesUpdateDay
And now: one of my fave people in the world @CroweTim chatting about how to understanding the research and how to keep up to date with the latest research. @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Love how Tim is breaking down the scariness of research and talking about how to interpret some of the terms we often come across. This is so important in our role as dietitians when reading and interpretations research @DAA_feed #diabetesupdateday
@CroweTim’s homework from today: go home and sign up to electronic table of contents (eTOCs) from journals in topic areas of your interest!

@DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Wow! Blown away after moderating a fabulous panel around dietary patterns and type 2 diabetes management with @CroweTim, Emanuala Araia, Electra Ulrich and Amy Castelli.

Check out some of our audience questions to see what we covered!

@DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
And next up, continuing in from some of the conversation we had in the panel, the amazing Emanuala talking about the importance of developing a healthy relationship with food in people with diabetes.

@DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
There’s a lack of research around eating disorders in people with type 2 diabetes. Most of the emerging research focuses on binge eating but it’s suspected that restrictive eating and disordered eating is rife. @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Ps thanks @wadekelly for the soling slido into my life 😉 #SeeWhatIDidThere
Emanuala leaves us with some great resources including some from @NDSS_AUS to support dietitians in their practice @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay
Final speaker for @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay is Neale Cohen giving us an update on type 2 diabetes path physiology and medications.

#AlmostThere!
And we’re out! Another @DAA_feed #DiabetesUpdateDay done. Thank you to everyone who attended, our sponsors, volunteers and everyone in the organising committee for their hard work! Here’s what the day did to my sugars 🙈🙈🙈
