I'm pleased my blue state, Maryland, takes COVID-19 seriously. Here's what's happening here:

* Schools closed
* Housing evictions halted
* No large events
* Nonessential state employees to telework
* Senior centers closed
* Cruise ship terminal closed
* National guard activated
I'm relieved esp. about the schools. Now we can burrow in & limit outside contact, as both husband & I are fortunate to be able to work from home.

He runs a business locally, but set things up long ago so his employees have company laptops & can work from home in emergencies.
Baltimore County Schools in MD is offering students "Grab and Go" meals even while schools are closed due to Corona virus.

This is how it's done in a blue state.

Is this legal? I thought voting was supposed to be private. If they're separating the lines by party and making the DEM line a longer wait, this is voter suppression.
Usually voter suppression tactics are less obvious - they put broken machines & longer lines in minority communities & pretend they're not targeting specific party.

I've never heard of separating lines by party. What's the use of privacy curtains if you're separated by line?
I assume we're talking a primary here, but are GOP holding primaries in any state? I thought they weren't.

This is one of those days I wonder if I died already & currently reside in Hell.
Pandemic.
Stock market crashing.
Kids in cages.
Neo-nazis.
Talk of second civil war.
Religious nut-jobs taking over government.
Dictatorship.
White House owned by Russia.
Sixth mass extinction & insect apocalypse (google it).

This is every disaster movie ever made.
And on a personal note, I have a pack of coyotes howling outside my window right now, which is super-creepy.

Not a metaphor - even tho I'm in Maryland, where I've lived my whole life & we never before had coyotes. They're here now.

Nothing feels real anymore.

Corona virus could turn out to be a big scary deal. Here's why.

Corona virus kills about 2% of those infected, which seems to us very low, but that number is deceptive. It's already killed more people than far deadlier viruses & this thread explains why it's more dangerous.
First, some scary context. The 1918 Spanish Flu, which killed 50 MILLION people worldwide, had a mortality rate similar to Corona virus - about 2.5%.

How could a virus with such a seemingly low mortality rate kill so many when more lethal viruses don't?
It's precisely BECAUSE the virus is deadly - but not too deadly - that it can kill more.

H5N1 - the bird flu that terrified us earlier this century - kills 60% of those who get it. It is far more lethal than Corona. Yet Corona has already caused more deaths.

As the US and many other countries brace for an uptick in new infections, hospitalizations, and deaths due to #COVID-19, here is one other problem almost no one is talking about: long-term chronic illness.

Some thoughts on our collective reaction to #COVIDー19/#CoronaVirus:

Those who think the health effects have been overblown are likely right. It’s NOT likely as deadly as some have predicted & it’s NOT going to be as widespread in the US as it has been in other countries 1/
But here’s the rub: we’re still *under reacting*. We need to continue closing down large events, suspending schools, working from home — we should be seeking & embracing a month of *social isolation* not just *social distancing* Why?

The issue w/ #CoronaVirus is how fast it spreads. It is going to overwhelm our institutions. Period.

The cascade of chaos will cause far more suffering than the virus. We need to throttle this thing. We can’t snuff it out entirely, but minimizing the impact is priority

What do computer viruses teach us about #COVIDー19? I don't think anything, but in this thread I'm going to try to draw corollaries anyway, because cyber.
"Don't touch your face" is stupid advice, just like "don't open suspicious attachments" or "don't click on suspicious links in emails". Email is designed to have attachments and links, asking people to not use the product as designed is nonsense.
This video went viral (sic) of a health official advising people to not touch their face as she, and the people behind her, touch their faces. People are going to click on email links and touch their faces.

Yet again I'm fascinated how the first casualty of the coronavirus is language. The below statement is true, of course: Worry over coronavirus is legitimate, panic is dumb.
That's what I get googling the definition of "panic", defined as "sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behavior".

By it's very definition, panic is dumb.
It goes onto infect the entire country and kills a million people, Elon can still go back and justify that tweet: "Yes, worry was legitimate, I was just saying the panic was dumb".
