2/ We need to move past the impossible binary btw slowing disease spread and providing social services for at need kids and move on to how you ramp down or close the schools while providing critical support for at need kids. Nor is it just at need. It’s what to do for ...
3/ parents of critical workers who can’t leave kids at home. The answer may be keeping schools open on a limited basis. Even that will reduce density within the schools which is a plus in itself. It is important to remember the kids themselves are going to be okay.
4/ It’s the degree they’re a vector of spread for others. As one NYer told a PS principal last night: “I admire the rationale behind the Mayor's decision not to close schools - that doing so would put many children who are food insecure, or homeless, or unsupervised at risk.
5/ But that is not a medical rationale for keeping the schools open.” The Mayor and city government have done a job many of us are proud of. But on this issue, we need to quickly move toward thinking beyond this binary thinking.
