Today's coronavirus preparedness announcements:

1)
55% of schoolkids in America (30 mil) get meal assistance at school; 27% get 2 meals/day, becoming a primary nutritional source.

Please support food banks + programs that can help in times of crisis. Offer help to neighbors
2) if you have older neighbors, even if they have family around, check in, ask if you can help get groceries or run to the pharmacy. My older neighbors are super independent and would never ask for help! But if you offer, they sometimes say yes.
3) same for parents w/ small kids. It's hard to do errands with kids. Maybe you can watch kids for an hour or help with those errands.
During porch drinks the last few weeks, we've had lots more stop-by visitors and people coming out to say hi. Lots of questions. Neighbors want to know what everyone is doing.

Build the social fabric now. Community is critical.

A story about the supermarket checkers POTUS says must stay on the job:

My dad drove down to the big grocery store that’s serves the whole valley in not-close-to-things, Idaho. He needed aspirin and there wasn’t any left further up the valley /1
If you’ve never lived not in a city or on a shipping route — supplies run out. These communities are the end of the line. You actually have to go to the post office for your amazon packages *gasp*

Anyway. Supplies are getting sparse. Managers not sure when more comes /2
So my dad goes to check out with his aspirin, behind people with full loads (because they are worried and live really far from groceries), which up there is like$4-500/cart. when he get to the front of the line, the young checker bursts into tears.

My dad asks what’s wrong. /3

During an intv today, @brikeilarcnn raised an issue that I was discussing with active duty friends yesterday: if prior lung damage is a factor in coronavirus cases, will it impact veterans/troops with burn pit & other toxic exposures at higher rates? /1
Staying on top of this as data is available, and ensuring necessary preparations are done now, is important. This all needs to be communicated transparently to the active duty/veteran community. /2
This is doubly important if we are counting on national guard, military in contingency planning for hard hit areas. /3

On CNN, Maryland Gov Larry Hogan, repub + chair of nat'l governors association, just said: "We're dealing with the crisis on the ground in our states... We're going to make decisions on our own based on facts on the ground in our own states."

Noted condemnation of fed govt chaos
He points on he declared a state of emergency, state legislature passed emergency spending/funding measures to address immediate gaps. Says newly approved federal funds will mostly just reimburse things.
Hogan sounds like a man on the way to the WH to tell govt to get it's sh*t together.

Of course after a morning of tweeting unhelpful statements, POTUS is off to Florida fundraising events for his campaign, and won't be there for the vidcon with all state governors. 👍

Today in #coronavirus:

3 reasons to think it will only be flu-plus:

1) China's new infections have (reportedly) plunged; outside Wuhan they're close to zero.
2) Singapore and HK - tightly packed cities - have controlled new cases.
3) The deaths are mostly in the old and sick.
And 3 reasons to think it won't:

1) China essentially had to shut down to slow the spread.
2) Many patients need massive supportive care; many docs and nurses get sick despite careful precautions; thus it strains the health-care system far more than flu.
3) It's very contagious.
If I had to guess, I'd guess in a year or two this will look more like a series of rolling provincial/national outbreaks than The Walking Dead. We'll get some okay antivirals and a moderately effective vaccine; the economic hit will be real and heaviest on the travel industry...

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.

But even a minor adjustment of a few days in the mortality rate paints an entirely different picture
