Could manufacture of rudimentary ventilators be ramped up? In principle, all you need is a one way valve, resuscitation bag, and an energy source. Someone could probably code up a Raspberry Pi to regulate it with a patient's breathing. Not FDA approved but so what.
Here's a book on the basics of ventilator design. In the 70s they used to be mechanical in a way normal clinicians could repair. Today automated ventilators have multiple microprocessors and require trained biomedical engineers to maintain.

Capacity to care for intubated patients and beds in rehab facilities will be needed to quickly discharge patients from ICUs to open space for someone else.

Note I'm an economist, not an epidemiologist. I'm writing from the premise that this epidemic is going to get much worse in the weeks and months ahead, but it's not my place to say. I defer to infectious disease experts and so should you.
That said, from a *policy* perspective, the U.S. government’s response to COVID-19 has so far left a lot to be desired. The virus has further cascaded into an economic crisis, raising the risk of a recession—if we're not already in one.

It's striking how the left and right's analytical framework has flipped.

The left (@ezraklein) analyzes polarization via noncognitive psychology, long the conservative / anti-rational approach.

The right (Lind, Caldwell) analyze in terms of materialism, ideology, & class power.
@ezraklein Ironically this trend may be downstream of the left's pretense to reason and empiricism. The last two decades have been boom years for academics working in moral psychology, social psych, neuro and behavioral econ, and the pop-sci books they spawned. All deeply noncognitivist.
@ezraklein The performative contradiction involved in reasoning your way to the impotence of human reason is rarely noted. "Haven't you heard about that one split brain experiment? Or the one where people were grouped into arbitrary teams and began hating each other? Scary!"

What explains the rise of State Capacity Libertarianism, @tylercowen's umbrella term for folks with pro-market, pro-growth views who nonetheless favor a strong, capable government?

I identify three central motivations here:

@tylercowen The first motivation I see is the relationship between technology and the state. An entrepreneurial state can enable new technologies, but capturing the benefits of things like AI will require building privacy and civil liberty protections into the technology itself.
@tylercowen Consider @mgurri's Revolt of the Public thesis. If information tech and mass protest are destabilizing, lower state capacity countries may well attempt to import a Chinese-style panopticon. We need to export tech that can secure public order while protecting minority rights.

Someone asked me for advice on remote meeting since I’ve worked in a virtual team for more than a decade. With more online gatherings becoming more likely w/ #coronavirus, thought wld turn this into a [thread] instead.

Some lessons learnt on having #remotemeeting
1. Decide which platform. Generally, find the most appropriate tech (rather than the most shiny one of the moment). Some things to consider:
- Need to set up accounts? (e.g. Skype)
- Need to d/l an app? (e.g. Zoom, Goto meeting)
- Heavy machine power to run?
Generally, I prefer browser based, no sign-ins needed.

My fav go-to is: meet.jit.si - encrypted, open source, no need to sign in, can manage a bunch of users. But sometimes it can be a little buggy.

Okay! FOR REASONS, here's a thread on the challenges and advantages I've faced as a female swordfighter, since fantasy often gets this wrong.

First thing I'm going to do is a pivot: it's not actually about gender at all.
Some women are 6' tall and burly! Some guys are 5' 2" and scrawny! Enbies are all over the place!

So this is really just a thread about swordfighting when you're kinda short and not super ripped. 😂
Now, fantasy tends to focus on strength differences. I can't speak to this as directly because the games I play have safety rules that sideline strength because we're not actually trying to murder each other. 😁 HOWEVER!

Let's start with some background. Why do we talk about 1.5?
In the Paris Agreement at the end of 2015, 195 countries agreed to hold the average temperature increase below 2°C and to make efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. It was a major diplomatic and environmental achievement. 🎆👏🏽
The IPCC was asked for a report on the effects of global warming of 1.5°C and the possible pathways that would avoid exceeding this threshold. The effort was huge: 224 authors reviewed more than 6,000 scientific articles and more than 42,000 comments from expert reviewers.

I feel like driving up some controversy, so how about a thread of Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions! You know the drill, one like = one take/opinion.

Start easy: the blunt awkwardness/cringe of 'Blurryface' is the point of taking the piss out of Tyler. I stand by my light 9/10.
2. I don't hate Nickelback's 'Dark Horse' - it's easily a record for them at their most tasteless, but the frat-bro swagger of it helps some of their better hooks.
3. 'Fireflies' by Owl City is a genuinely terrific song that captures precocious, starry-eyed wonderment better than few others in the 2000s.

It is SPECTACULARLY lame, but that's why it works.
