Most Washingtonians are buying responsibly. @waEMD recommends having 2 weeks of food and supplies on hand.

Those that are overbuying are putting their friends and neighbors at risk.

Washingtonians - you are setting the bar for how other states respond to this.

COVID-19 is spreading in WA and around the globe.

To protect our people, we must continue to escalate our response. 1/6
Tomorrow, we will temporarily shut down restaurants, bars and entertainment/recreational facilities statewide.

The COVID-19 outbreak is evolving quickly. We are not waiting to take the measures needed to contain it.

Today, I am expanding my school closure order to all K-12 schools statewide. They will close by Tuesday, March 17 and will remain closed through at least Friday, April 24. Image
Critical services schools provide our students will need to continue during closures.

That includes nutrition assistance for any student who needs it as well as child care, particularly for health care workers, emergency personnel and low income families.
I am also restricting activity at all public and private universities, colleges, community colleges, technical schools and private career schools and apprenticeships.

This will match the timeline of K-12 schools – March 17 through at least April 2

I am directing the closure of all K-12 schools in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Schools must close by Tuesday, March 17th and stay closed through Friday, April 24.
We know school closures impact families. But we must take the difficult steps necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19.

I have asked schools to continue providing services for students who rely on school meals or experience homelessness.
Closing schools can have an impact on staff at hospitals, health care facilities and other critical services.

To mitigate this, I have asked school superintendents to provide free childcare to families of medical professionals and first responders.

Only six weeks ago, in the last days of January, Wuhan, China was seeing thousands of new cases a day. The hospitals were overwhelmed, and 14% of nurses became infected. It got pretty Dantean. 2/11
On January 23, China imposed draconian public health measures to try and halt the spread. At that point, there had been 517 #COVIDー19 cases in Wuhan, and 17 deaths—on both counts, fewer than America has right now. 3/11

The city of Wuhan, China, where #COVIDー19 started, waited weeks before acknowledging human-to-human transmission and taking measures to control it. Wuhan thus experienced an out-of-control epidemic that overwhelmed the health care system.
Other cities in China watched Wuhan’s experience and imposed strict controls at a much earlier stage in their epidemic: They closed schools, sharply limited social contact, and traced and isolated cases and contacts. These early interventions dramatically slowed transmission.
These experiences, & historical parallels, like 1918 flu, show early and sustained imposition of measures to limit social contact will slow the epidemic. This is desirable for many reasons — fewer total people get infected in a slowly moving epidemic... bostonglobe.com/2020/03/11/opi…

New paper submitted by Ruoran Li @HarvardCCD and colleagues to medRxiv this afternoon shows experience of Wuhan in dealing with COVID in Jan and February. 2/x
On peak day of Wuhan epidemic in late Feb, there were ~9600 people seriously ill; 2087 people needing critical care/ventilators. That's beyond capacity of health care system in any US city. So we need to consider how to slow COVID-19 spread in US through social distancing.3/x

What do computer viruses teach us about #COVIDー19? I don't think anything, but in this thread I'm going to try to draw corollaries anyway, because cyber.
"Don't touch your face" is stupid advice, just like "don't open suspicious attachments" or "don't click on suspicious links in emails". Email is designed to have attachments and links, asking people to not use the product as designed is nonsense.
This video went viral (sic) of a health official advising people to not touch their face as she, and the people behind her, touch their faces. People are going to click on email links and touch their faces.
