Social distancing isn’t about removing the individual from society.

That’s impossible.

It’s about a radical reduction in the number of contacts with outer society.

Our greatly exaggerated interest in outer society usually comes at the expense of the inner society, the family.
Modern institutions work systematically to increase contact with outer society:

The factory takes work out of the home.

The school takes children out of the home.

The elimination of the sabbath wipes out the day reserved for the home.
Add to this the television, phones, and computers, and even the home itself is turned toward the outside.

The family is so open to the outside that it has no inside.
In reducing contact with outside society, social distancing creates a space where the starved and evacuated inner society—the family—can begin to grow again.
Of course this may be uncomfortable until we figure out how to do it again.

But if you pay attention, you can see it. The inner society begins to strengthen itself at the expense of the outer.

A balance that was lost can be restored.
