So this was @Asda today. People had bought literally every single can of beans, bag of pasta, canned anything, bread, I mean I could go on but you get the gist. And then this country considers itself “civilised” and above the rest of Europe. Like, really?
It’s not #ASDA ‘s fault, from today they started the max 3 of the same item limit but obviously they need to catch with the restocking. People are DISGUSTING. The food supply has not been interrupted; we have food. How many fucking cans of been do you need?
And this is coming from a country that still bangs on about the “Blitz spirit”! Which I’m sure did not involve stockpiling anything that isn’t nailed down at your local supermarket.
What did @MikeH_PR call it? “Selfish hoarding” - not panic buying. There’s nothing panicked about this, it’s just fucking greed and selfishness. I hope these people get buried alive when the towers of crap they’ve stockpiled in their homes collapse on them.
Because that’s the other thing: where do they store all this shit? Do they all live in fucking mansions? Surely you can only freeze so much bread? Do they all have nuclear bunkers in their back gardens?
Then a member of staff brought out two pallets of paper goods, not even bothering to unload them because why bother? And because of the limited choice we bought a bigger pack than we needed. But at least it eased my chronic TP Anxiety:
Meanwhile in Italy, where shit really has hit the fan, people have calmed the fuck down and supermarkets are well stocked - helped by the lockdown and staggering the numb and of customers being allowed inside.
I heard some really sad updates from Italy today. People are dying; elderly people are no longer going to be intubated. Meanwhile here we fight over baked beans and bog roll. This is not humanity. It’s fucking depressing.
Someone at my husband’s work said “oh it’s not going to be all that over here”. He asked her how many people had to die to be bad?
Another idiot said to him that in Italy the virus spread because “people greet each other with a kiss”.
My husband came home and said “I can’t deal with these racist, ignorant fucks anymore”. (Husband is English. He feels rage on my behalf).
Anyway. That was my brutal clash with the new post-apocalyptic reality we are suddenly finding ourselves in. Tomorrow I’ll try to find compassion and loving kindness for selfish hoarding human beings but tonight I’m saving that people who deserve it more.
@threadreaderapp unroll please
Update: I sent my photos of the empty shelves to my sister, who is in lockdown in Milan. She said in Italy the panic buying didn’t last very long and now shops are well stocked. She could not believe there was not one single bag of pasta in ASDA.
Went to my local Coop to get bananas (found some). Bumped into a neighbour who had just been to @asda , @sainsburys and @Morrisons and had seen pretty much the same scenes I saw yesterday. People with trolleys FULL of stuff.
Clearly the 3 items per shopper limit isn’t stopping people.
