We expect the fight against COVID-19 to be a long one.

I wish that wasn't the case for New York City, but right now we are looking at months.

We expect April to be tougher than March, and May to be tougher still.
I hear people like the President talk about getting back to work, getting back to normal in a few weeks.

Normal won’t be possible if our health care system is being overwhelmed and lives are being lost.
We now have 15,597 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New York City. We are this country’s epicenter, and we need federal help consistent with the challenges we’re facing.
We need enormous help, and nothing is more important than ventilators. Something is deeply wrong when there are ventilators sitting in federal warehouses when New Yorkers are at risk.

If a ventilator isn’t readily available, someone in respiratory distress can die in minutes.
We heard today that the Defense Protection Act was activated for the first time. We MUST get production increased immediately. I’m pleased the DPA is finally being used, now we have to use it a LOT more.
We’re making hard decisions about our City budget right now. I’ve asked OMB to initiate a PEG program immediately and I want to affirm that today.

The goal will be to cut at least $1.3 billion and the process has already begun at all agencies. COVID-19 response will NOT be cut.
We’re making important decisions about our City jails. No one over 70 or with pre-existing conditions should be in our jail system right now and we are working to make that a reality.
There are approximately 300 people with misdemeanors and non-violent felonies that I’m going to move to release immediately. For those that fall outside my jurisdiction, I am alerting the State and District Attorneys to my concerns.
The NYPD are explaining and enforcing the new social distancing rules at parks and playgrounds.

With warmer days coming, we need people to understand: if they don’t follow the rules, we’ll have little choice but to shut down spaces like playgrounds. We’ll assess on Saturday.
Some good news to report: the streets have been kept clean with folks socially isolating, so we will suspend Alternate Side Parking for an additional seven days, through Tuesday, March 31st. We will continue to look at the situation week by week, to ensure our streets stay clean.
We are working with the City Council to start opening a limited number of streets to pedestrians, joggers and cyclists on Thursday. The streets selected will be based on where there's the greatest need while also guaranteeing the NYPD will be able to enforce proper distancing.
It’s critical that our essential workers have the transportation they need to keep our City running. Thank you to @CitiBikeNYC for offering a FREE 30-day membership to these crucial workers.
