This is hard for us to grasp in our age of immediacy and instant gratification, but that's not how pandemics work; in the US, we're looking at a rolling wave of spread that's nowhere close to peaking in the vast majority of the country.
The whole point of social distancing and lockdowns is that the temporary disruption is preferable to a long, drawn-out period of rolling infection that overwhelms the health system, knocks vital workers out of their jobs with illness, and, oh yeah, might kill lots of people.
It's not actually that complicated. The math is straightforward. The irony is that taking serious measures to dampen the spread is the rational course of action, and the panic response is trying to act as if we can just act normally and get on with our lives of consumption.
The obstacle here is people who quite literally cannot conceptualize what mass illness, not to mention mass mortality, does to vital services. A society full of sick people, and people who are living in fear of getting sick, doesn't function particularly well.
I don't really blame people for not grasping this - we don't have any immediate experience with it - but pandemics are real, mass mortality is real, and that's leaving aside the inconvenience of lots of people being so ill they require major medical intervention.
Y'all ever seen a plague pit? Real things. That's not scaremongering.
You can't bargain with a virus. During the Black Death, flagellants tried to atone for their and society's sins by whipping themselves in public and loudly begging forgiveness. It didn't work then, and loudly declaring your willingness to die for some Hooters Wings won't work now
