The American Conservative wrote a series of glowing profiles arguing that Orban was a model for Trump and the rest of Europe to follow, and that the press calling him illiberal was misleading. Will they apologize now that it turns out Orban was exactly who he appeared to be?
Jordan Peterson was there to support Orban's policies, including political control of parts of academia, such as eliminating fields regarded to be teaching political correctness.
Christopher Caldwell found multiple opportunities to praise Orban. Patrick Deheen was also used as a propaganda tool by the government.
Orban has been telling us who he is for years. He has shut down free speech, bringing the media and academia under government control. But all it took to charm some influential conservative intellectuals was a display of overt religiosity and a promise to protect "the West."
One of the biggest tells about the US campus speech debates is that people who were howling about disagreements about the name of sandwiches in Oberlin had nothing to say about Orban shutting down an entire university.
Its more likely that the White House will think about how they can copy Orban then condemn him.
