I get that folks want MARC to die, & the process of getting a replacement is taking forever.

However, telling folks that worked w/MARC & other forms of cataloging standards that they have nothing valuable to contribute to the "metadata ecosystem" is a red button topic of mine.
Part of it comes from the unspoken pairing of metadata w/technology, and cataloging w/traditional librarianship, and how gender and power dynamics play in these pairings in our discussions around description and organizing info.

[Tangent - I still encounter the use of the word "sexy" w/r/t tech and metadata work. The fact that people still view objects and ideas as sexually desirable tells you a lot about the values of the people assigning said desirability as well as the audience for said comment.]

In school yesterday, a case of pre eclampsia was reviewed( for those who do not know what this means, it’s simply one of the hypertensive disorders in pregnancy)
and the patient was subsequently booked for an emergency cesarean section and she was delivered of a live female and
Both the mother and baby are fine
We get to see a lot of deliveries both complicated and uncomplicated ones and we are always happy to hear that both the mother and baby are fine, what struck me today about this particular patient was the fact that this isn’t particularly a happy story.

For those who asked, here's a quick recap of my comments from the plenary on 'A #Data Driven World – Can we Ensure #Privacy?' at @OECD #GoingDigital. 1. Innovation is not in opposition to privacy: innovation *in* privacy is a huge opportunity, and a competitive advantage. 1/n
2. Framing and narratives matter. Seeing #data only as an asset (oil, gold, currency, etc) ignores implicit risks. Also seeing it as radioactive (with a half-life), an externality, a ticking time bomb, a liability, etc helps to locate it in a larger ecosystem. 2/n #GoingDigital
3. To a tech hammer, every socioeconomic problem looks like a tech nail. Informational asymmetries and power imbalances require attention to complex structural issues, not just on deployment of one size fits all tech solutions in a box. 3/n #GoingDigital

Morning campers! I’ll be live-tweeting from the European Court of Justice today about @Google’s “Right to be Forgotten” hearing.

What’s the main point? Should Europe (or France’s #privacy regulator) be able to apply its rules over the internet worldwide.

A recap:
La Vanguardia, a Spanish newspaper, published records in the late 1990s detailing the debt delinquencies of Mario Costeja.

About a decade later, Costeja sued, saying that the publication breached his right to privacy.
After a lengthy legal dispute, the case was referred to the ECJ which, in 2014, ruled that individuals had the right to ask that search engines like @Google remove links (but not the underlying webpages) from search results
