Jan 22nd Trump said “We have it totally under control.” On January 30th Trump said that “we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us.” Also stated that he trusts President Xi.

Jan 31st the Trump administration announced they would bar entry by most foreign nationals who had recently visited China and put some American travelers under a quarantine. American citizens in China who could have been exposed to the virus or contracted it themselves...
...immediate family members of American citizens and permanent residents were able to come back to America. “Some" would have been quarantined despite the fact they could be asymptomatic and there was no consensus on how to treat those with COVID19.
