It was Russian hackers who captured data from the Bundestag administration five years ago, including numerous emails from Chancellor Merkel's office. It now reacts and calls the attack "outrageous".
Chancellor Angela Merkel blamed Russia for the hacker attack on the Bundestag five years ago and threatened the consequences. The fact that the traces of the attack led to Russian intelligence five years ago was "more than unpleasant",
said the former CDU leader in Question Time of the Bundestag - she found it "outrageous". Such an incident "naturally disrupts trustful cooperation," said the Chancellor. "Of course, we reserve the right to take measures against Russia."
In the hacker attack on the Bundestag in 2015, the perpetrators had apparently "picked up what could be got" relatively indiscriminately. She was glad that a "specific person" was now on the wanted list. "I take these things very seriously."
Merkel emphasized that not only her own Bundestag office had become the target of the attack, but also others. The fact that the traces of the perpetrators lead to Russia had leaked several years ago.
The fact that Merkel's computer was affected had been reported shortly after the case became known. Now the Chancellor officially reacted to it for the first time. According to media reports, German investigators have identified the alleged main person responsible:
It is said to be Dimitri Badin, an agent of the Russian military secret service GRU. The attack in the Bundestag in May 2015 completely paralyzed the IT infrastructure. To stop it, the entire parliament had to be taken offline for days.
According to a report, GRU hackers had apparently captured emails from Merkel's office on a large scale. Experts from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and private companies have now partially reconstructed the attack,
the report says. Accordingly, two email subjects from Merkel's MP's office were the target of the attack. They would have contained the mail correspondence from 2012 to 2015. The hackers apparently succeeded in completely copying both mailboxes to another computer,
the report said. The extent to which the copied emails came into the possession of the GRU is still unclear. According to information from security circles, analyzes by a private company should suggest an outflow on a larger scale.
The alleged chief responsible Badin is sought by the US federal police FBI because of his involvement in other attacks by the hacking group "Fancy Bear" aka APT28.
The targets of "Fancy Bear" included the Democrats in the 2016 US election campaign and the organization for the ban on chemical weapons OPCW.
