Classifying people into distinct groups based on appearance (skin, hair, nose, eyelid, cheekbone, skull) dates to the late 1600s. Prior to this point, Europeans classified people by religion, not appearance.
Laws in the American colonies forbid the enslavement of Christians until enslaved people converted & successfully sued for their freedom. Then the word #white replaced the word #Christian in #slavery laws.
