Last Saturday, @souvikdg and @hallidude chatted about the pros and cons of @CraftCMS on hasgeek.com/metarefresh/co…. If you are deciding on whether to adopt #CraftCMS, you will find this thread useful. (1/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS .@CraftCMS is a general purpose Content Management System (CMS) which differentiates itself from other #alternatives by offering a clean starting point coupled with great tools to build a #website. (2/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS .@CraftCMS features a clear separation of concern between the content models, presentation and business logic. Since you begin with a clean slate, you have to bring your own #HTML and #design. There is no starter theme.
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS Whether you are a #content strategist, #author, #designer, #developer or a #website owner, #CraftCMS offers something for you. Let’s look at three broad buckets: Content/Design, Authoring/Ownership and Development. (4/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS #Content Strategists & #Designers can hand-craft content models using Fields (incl. Matrix), Sections (Singles, Channels & Structures), Entries & Entry Types, Categories & Tags and Relationships. @CraftCMS also provides out-of-the-box Multi-site and Localisation support. (5/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS #Authors and #Website owners will love the Live Preview (with Preview Targets), Asset Manager (incl. #Cloud Storage Support), #Image Editor, Users (with Groups and Fine-grained Permissions), Drafts, #Versioning and Trash. (6/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS Since #CraftCMS runs on the popular #PHP-MySQL stack, many #developers will find it easy to adopt. The underlying Yii2 Framework and Twig templating language are popular #OpenSource technologies. @CraftCMS also supports #PostgreSQL. (7/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS #CraftCMS packs in a great set of dev features: #Debug #Toolbar, Webhooks, #GraphQL, Element API, Project #Config (to share models and settings between multiple environments), Headless mode, Task Queues and a #Testing Framework. (8/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS Most of these features come directly out-of-the-box; some are through first-party plugins. There is also the Plugin Store for more extensions and great #community support over #Discord, #StackExchange and #DotAll Conference (9/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS Fastest way to demo the control panel and find your bearings is by going to demo.craftcms.com. If you’re a #developer, you can also setup a local copy of the demo #website: github.com/craftcms/demo (10/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS To setup #CraftCMS from scratch, follow the Composer based installation process docs.craftcms.com/v3/installatio… followed by running the setup wizard either on the command line or using the web #browser. (11/13)
@souvikdg @hallidude @CraftCMS Based on your expectations. some shortcomings are:
- the Redactor WYSIWYG Editor ain’t that great
- no chrome-less editor
- no starting theme/theme editor
- no frontend toolbar
- has a free edition but needs a license for multi-user use. (12/13)
Overall @CraftCMS is a good option to consider if you want a custom hand-crafted website. You can start simple, but you can also push the boundaries using the underlying #developer #tools and #frameworks. (13/13)
