What is the future of @UNPeacekeeping in the #COVID19 era? Following up on strong articles by @CedricdeConing, @NamieDiRazza, @DeSachenka, @AdamDayNYC, @CharlieKwame and others, I step up with @louise_riis to make some prognostications in two pieces @diisdk.

The basic challenge of #COVID19 and #peacekeeping is that (i) the #pandemic may actually increase demand for @UN peacemaking, etc.; but (ii) reduce the available resources, @louise_riis and I argue in our first @diisdk piece [2/8]. diis.dk/publikationer/…
In simple terms, #COVID19 could reverse hard-won @UNPeacekeeping/@UNDPPA work in some fragile states, and weaken others, but @UN members will want to save $$$ [3/8] 
So @louise_riis and I can actually envisage @UNPeacekeeping operations having to take on *more* roles in cases where #COVID19 exacerbates or creates crises, but these tasks won't be cost neutral. [4/8]
Overall, we predict @diisdk that the #UNSC and #UNGA will push for firm limits (although not necessarily immediate cuts) to @UNPeacekeeping/@UNDPPA missions. [5/8]

Our basic take is that, while the #UNSC/#UNGA should avoid cutting back existing @UNPeacekeeping missions willy-nilly to save costs,@UN will need to "think small" for a while. [7/8]
But to end on a positive note, while @louise_riis and I think that #COVID19 will present *big* challenges to @UN, @UNPeacekeeping, @UNDPPA, @UNPeacebuilding and other @UN actors still have some real strengths to draw on during #pandemic. [ENDS]
