#Israel has offered #Lebanon humanitarian and medical aid. Unfortunately the Lebanese government did not react. This was to be expected as the offer came from an enemy. On Twitter and other social media I saw a lot of very cynical and negative comments about 1/
the „horrible“ Israelis and their fraudulent offer. This is really sad. Many years ago I made a film about the field hospital Israel has set up on the Golan helping #Syrian civilians who were victims of the civil war there. The Israeli doctors saved lives, made operations. 2/
These Syrian civilians were very thankful. And between the Israeli medical staff and those people human, personal bonds were developed. Beyond politics! We all know that we cannot trust politics. So what is left if you want to develop some kind of understanding and trust? 3/
Even friendships? Only personal contacts. I deeply believe in personal contacts, not in politicians. Israeli medical teams in #Beirut good not only help the victims, the injured citizens of this wonderful town. They could develop relationships with each others. 4/
Lebanese and Israelis. Would politics immediately change after that? Certainly not. But „the enemy“ would get a face, would become a human being of blood and flesh. I remember during the last #Gaza war in 2014, there was an Israeli sitting on the hill of the border town Sderot 5/
every evening he was sitting on the hill watching #Gaza. Hanging on the phone speaking Arabic. He was an Israeli Jew of Maroccan descent. I asked him one evening whom he was talking to. And he said: to my friend Ahmad. He lives in #Gaza. We haven‘t seen each other for 20 years 6/
but we used to work with each other, we became friends with our families. Ok, I said, and what to do talk to him now. And this Israeli told me: I warn him. When I see that one of our F-16 or F-15 or Apaches arrive, I tell him to run and hide - 7/
Guys out there... all you who hate Israelis and all you who hate Arabs. Such a rescue and medical team could do more than just healing wounds, injuries... they could plant a seed of human connection. It is a pity that #Israeli rescue and medical teams won‘t be able to go 8/
to #Beirut. It would have been a chance for everybody. A very small one, I know. But it would have been more than there is right now 9/9
sorry for typos!
