75 years ago, @UN was founded to unite the world to confront the challenges facing all of humanity. With growing inequality, climate crisis, #COVID19, toxic nationalism, and ongoing conflict - it is clear that the promise of the UN remains as important as ever. #UN75
We celebrate the @UN#UN75. Its humanitarian efforts have saved lives, it has brokered and kept peace in conflict areas around the world, promoted #HumanRights, and created & championed an agenda for sustainable development. #PeaceDay#GlobalGoals
But @UN's promise remains unfulfilled. Globally, #WomensRights are being rolled back, women human rights defenders are under attack. 25 yrs since the Beijing Declaration, & 20 yrs since UNSC Res. 1325, govts aren't meeting commitments to #WomenPeaceSecurity & gender equality.
Civic space is shrinking and as @UN meets virtually #UNGA, we're concerned about civil society's meaningful participation. The UN system must heed the calls to listen to & fund local leaders, to be more inclusive, and to continue its work to fight systemic racism everywhere. ✊🏽✊🏿
The @UN Security Council is paralyzed on key issues. The so-called great powers use vetoes for their own aims at the expense of ppl living in conflict. It took months to agree on a #COVID19 Resolution that didn’t fully back @antonioguterres’ ceasefire call oxfam.org/en/research/co…
We look to govts to recommit to a world governed by law, cooperation & rights, instead of a world where might makes right & self-interest prevails. We call on leaders to live up to commitments in the Declaration to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of @UN. un.org/pga/74/wp-cont…
Not just that. While we struggle to pay energy bills, the richest 1% have amassed $42 trillion in new wealth over the past decade, nearly 34 times more than the entire bottom 50% of the world’s population.
UPDATE: A small group of rich nations - representing just 13% of world population - have bought up MORE THAN HALF the supply of leading #COVID19 vaccine contenders.
#COVID19: As we approach 30 million cases worldwide...
“We will never be able to produce a vaccine at the scale required until corporations share their knowledge free from patents. We need a #PeoplesVaccine, not a profit vaccine.” - @Anna_Marriott
Jeff Bezos could personally pay each of @amazon’s 876,000 employees a one-off bonus of more than $100,000 - and still be as wealthy as he was at the beginning of the pandemic.
BEIRUT: One month since the #BeirutBlast killed over 180 people, injured more than 6,500 and displaced some 300,000 residents... and still thousands of people simply can’t afford a front door. oxf.am/31VM41o
You are powering Oxfam’s partner-led response in #Beirut, providing over 9,000 people with support ranging from emergency cash & food, medical services, mental health support, legal assistance and help to repair and rebuild homes and businesses. #ThankYou
A staggering 9.3 million Syrians are now going to sleep hungry and +2m more are at risk of a similar fate. #Covid19 restrictions, the collapse of the Syrian pound, and the displacement of millions of people are a disastrous combination.
The #coronavirus care workload continues to fall disproportionately on women – particularly those from ethnic & racial minorities, those living in poverty and in communities without access to basic infrastructure and services. oxf.am/2Y9sFYL #HowICare
Women do more care work in every country across the globe because of a lack of investment in public services, a labor market that ignores people’s care needs, and harmful stereotypes that consider care work to be women’s work and less skilled or valuable than paid work. #HowICare
