The US relationship with #Turkey is expected to be tense under Joe Biden, but there are also opportunities for cooperation.
In this thread, I outline the areas of cooperation and conflict
1) Northern Syria- Conflict
The US under Biden will stridently criticize a Turkish offensive against Kurdish militias in Northern #Syria and might repair strained ties with Syrian Kurds.
A key Biden advisor has already endorsed Turkey's efforts to protect civilians in Idlib from #Russia and Assad.
3) Iran- Cooperation
Both Turkey and Biden want to restore the JCPOA. Turkey's oil and non-oil trade with #Iran could also surge, which is a win for Ankara.
4) Eastern Mediterranean- Conflict
#Greece has already expressed confidence that Biden will be more assertive in reining in Turkey. Biden will be focused on regulating frictions within NATO and will rein in provocative conduct from #Turkey towards Greece.
5) Libya- Cooperation
Biden will be focused on sanctioning #Russia for its Wagner Group mercenaries in #Libya.
This might not impact Russia's actions or the conduct of its financiers (the #UAE and/or #KSA), but will give Turkey a free hand in western Libya.
6) Nagorno-Karabakh- Conflict
A Biden administration will frown on Turkey supporting further territorial expansion for #Azerbaijan.
Adam Schiff and other senior Democrats were pro-#Armenia and critical of Turkey's recruitment of Syrian mercenaries.
