I'm wasn't really sure at first how to start this, but I wanted to start to speak a bit about mental health. As this is a #space page, I decided to start with some research. In #spacepscyhology researchers consider #mentalhealth. (1/9) #MentalHealthAwareness
#space#pscyhologists look to studies in Antarctica (an extreme, isolated environment) to essentially have a larger population to study due to the small sample size of our astronauts currently. In addition to speaking with current & former astronauts. (2/9) #AcademicMentalHealth
I hope though, I can encourage others to have that conversation informally. I've seen the benefit of starting this conversation in practice. Especially in my classmates while I study at university, and even colleagues at a conference. (3/9) #AcademicMentalHealth
My story? It wasn't until I came across @ZJAyres I began actually mentioning I have ADHD. It felt kind of strange to prior to mentioning it, kind of like mentioning I have brown hair, but its always a conversation worth having. (4/9) #AcademicMentalHealth#ADHDinSTEM
I started a conversation about my ADHD just offhandedly & consequently opened up the conversation with colleagues who needed to talk to someone as they navigated around barriers to seek treatment and support. (5/9) #ADHDinSTEM
Conversations about #mentalhealth no matter where you are in academia- or life are incredibly important. And don't be shy to start those conversations because⬇️ (6/9) #AcademicMentalHealth#ADHDinSTEM
I opened up about anxiety at a conference one day when I connected with a student to nervous to go in the networking. Realising you are not alone does help, and saw a smiling student on the networking floor later. This was a conversation worth having! (7/9) #AcademicMentalHealth
If you are looking for resources as you go through your degree, with Zoë's #mentalhealth advocacy she has curated and created a lot of amazing resources on mental health and has even started campaigns to raise awareness. Check them out➡️ zjayres.com (8/9) #ADHDinSTEM
You know, Zoë is actually looking for volunteers for one of her mental health campaigns! The #100Voices project. No matter where you are in academia, undergrad to Professor you are welcome to participate. Check it out (9/9) #ADHDinSTEM#ISUNET#space
On the note of conversations, there have been some amazing conversations with astronauts happening over the past few months. This as people turn to astronauts for inspiration as we try to cope in #iso. I'll have to link some tomorrow with this thread. (1/2)
If you have any resources or comments to add, please feel free to speak up. I intend to come back to this as there is more to add to this. Also, I would like to highlight a few space psychologists working at the moment researching some pretty cool things.

As a budding science communicator, I follow #science & #space info campaigns not only for entertainment, I follow to learn. One of the campaigns that have been a masterclass in comms of the #CopernicusEU#Sentinel6 project. (My thread on the launch campaign ⬇️)#scicomm#sentinerd
I also enjoyed #NASAHalloween campaign, this year they not only released some amazing posters (see below) but they also had a playlist of amazing spooky space music➡️ soundcloud.com/nasa/sets/sini…
@NASAJPL@Caltech I'm also learning a lot from the amazing media team at the @AusAntarctic. Their account is so much fun, they share the phenomenal work being done in #Antarctica! And interesting highlights from the animal life there, like this⬇️
Later tonight is the launch of #Sentinel6 (3:47 AM my local time). I've been learning so much following the lead up of this amazing multi-agency project, so excited!
A wonderful thing about the world of space is that we are all connected virtually during this time. I've got to take part in some amazing initiatives over the past few months and I look forward to seeing what's coming up!
The #SASpaceForum that was going to be in COVID safe conditions and virtually is now fully online. I look forward to live-tweeting the event from home! If you want to join, you can from anywhere in the world check out the link below⬇️
The #Sentinel6 is to be launched in T-10 hours! You can follow the event through Facebook, Twitter and have the links shared with you through Eventbrite.
Greetings from South Australia! Due to a COVID-19 cluster the events this week I was planning to tweet from in-person COVID safe events will instead be covered virtually. Because my mum is a high-risk case, I'm happy to be at home to keep the community safe. #StaySafeStayHome
You can normally follow me at @melaniejward. I tweet to help boost events across STEM in #space, #archaeology & #tech, share events I organise as well as interesting news I come across all while balancing #ADHD, #volunteering, job hunting and uni work.
My mask has @ISUnet's logo. I'm a proud scholarship student from this year's @isu_shssp. The masks are also a thank you gift, as part of #ISUNET's scholarship drive to support others attend so they too can recognise their potential in space. #ASC20
About my book, “Outer Solar System Moons: Your Personal 3D Journey” (Printed and digital copies can be purchased at etsy.com/shop/ETExists)...
I got the itch to author this after the success of my colleague’s book, “Mars: Your Personal 3D Journey” by @AntonioParis! 1/n
All of the 3D images were made in @Photoshop and the final draft was made in @powerpoint. While the entire process was very arduous and frustrating at times, the result has been nothing short of rewarding, as the book is finally starting to sell bigly! The very positive...2/n
