A glacier burst at the Reni village of Chamoli district in #Uttarakhand has triggered a massive flood in the #Joshimath area.
The water level in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers have reportedly crossed its regular flow suddenly on Sunday morning followed by an avalanche near a power project.
Remnants of the recent western disturbance affected the Western Himalayan region until very recently with moderate snow and rainfall in isolated areas. Overall #Uttarakhand had received deficit rainfall since January 1 despite recurring western disturbances in the area.
Breaking off of a portion of Nanda Devi glacier on Sunday morning said to be the reason behind the current floods. However, no fresh rains have been reported in the area and the situation is likely to improve by Sunday evening.
The Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Plant under Rishi Ganga Power Project has been damaged and at least 150 labourers are feared missing. Authorities have sounded high alert from #Chamoli to #Haridwar.
At Reni village which is 26 km far from Joshimath, the Dhauliganga river got flooded and destroyed many houses situated at the river banksides. Reni village is said to be the epicentre of the popular forest conservation campaign called the 'Chipko Movement' in 1973.
Evacuation operations have started along the #Dhauliganga and #Bhagirathi river banks. Indian Air Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have rushed their teams and infrastructure for the rescue operations.
Though no major impact of the disaster may be felt in #Rishikesh and #Haridwar, the towns have been put on alert. A government spokesman said that there was not much human habitation at the site where the glacier broke but a number of power projects have been hit.
Victims or people stranded in the affected area are requested to call for help on the following helpline numbers: 1905; 1070; 9557444486. Residents are also requested to not believe in any rumours and not to circulated unverified/old videos on social media.
"If required, people will be evacuated to safe places. National Disaster Response Force, SDRF and Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary have also been put on highest alert," the spokesman said.
