(1/4) #Floods are becoming frequent in Himalaya, particularly in the NW #Himalaya that has been related to the increasing impact of changing #climate
@SundriyalY @neh4chauhan @kaushik_kaush5 @firozgeologist
#Uttarakhand, NW #Himalaya has witnessed 2 major flood events in the last decade that killed >6000 people. This study is an attempt to explore the impact of potential flood on river bank slopes in Uttarakhand. (2/4)
We found that #slope material at the exposed #fluvial sequence and slope toe might displace forward ~0.12-0.4 m The potential #debris #flow from the slope may impact the retaining wall, supporting the slope, with a #pressure up to 150 k Pa. (3/4)

Why do people resist #climateadaptation? Our new paper uses a sociological resistance lens to identify overt and covert #popularresistance in 56 adaptation papers and analyses the Sites, Repertoires and Consequences of resistance to adaptation (1/X) doi.org/10.1016/j.gloe…
Societal responses to risks of #floods, #droughts, or #hurricanes – even those using a language of participation – might follow historical development pathways, strive to maintain the status quo, and directly or indirectly serve elite interests (2/X)
In recent years, we have seen an upsurge of civil society actors who co-produce adaptation solutions directly and mobilise for increased action, compensation, and reparation by those in power, for instance under the banner of #climatejustice (3/X)

🚨🌍 Global Carbon Budget 2022, out now!🌍🚨

It provides the latest update on how we humans have tampered with Earth's remarkable system of #carbon stocks and flows.

So what are the take-homes from our latest update?

@gcarbonproject @PFriedling
It's a story of persistent high global #CO2 emissions, but with some hints (and some hope!) that *total* human #emissions are levelling off.

(Although with considerable uncertainty in the land use change emissions).
But did anyone mention that we need to get that red line 👆 to hit zero to meet the commitments made in #Paris?

1/29. 📜NEW BRIEF: Today we launch “PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN: A Non-Economic #LossAndDamage (#NELD) Explainer” covering what #NELD is, why and how it happens, where it happens, who is most affected, and importantly, how we can respond.

🔗Get it here: lossanddamagecollaboration.org/publication/pa…
2/29. The brief begins with a foreword by @UNFCCC NELs Expert Group Member @IrfanUllahCDO, who highlights that Non-Economic #LossAndDamage has been largely overlooked in climate negotiations and that urgent action is needed to address #NELD happening now e.g. The #PakistanFloods.
3/29. Then @DLodry of @LossDamageYouth shares the powerful story of his lived experience of Non-Economic #LossAndDamage in #Cameroon called "The Tears Of A Village River And Its Population" which tells how climate-intensified #Drought can lead to a loss of #Culture and #Identity.

Discussed with @SanaMaqboool and @FarrukhKPitafi on @WorldPTV the possibility of #debt relief for Pakistan subsequent to the devastating #floods as a result of climate change
Rather than rolling over Pakistan’s existing debt by one year, the debt needs to restructured such that repayments are pushed back by 10-15 years. Also rather than taking on new loans we should insist on grants. External debt sustainability has reached its limit
If we succeed in restructuring the debt profile and create fiscal space, we will have to embark on climate adaptation measures. This cannot be delayed any further and the future is upon us

In the grim reality of #floods, Pakistanis young & old are providing hope, here are a few

The Solar Water Box provides robust, on-wheels, solar-powered water filtration unit that can deliver up to 10,000 litres of filtered water per day says @hamzafarrukh aljazeera.com/news/2022/9/18…
Another startup, called #PakVitae, is providing a filter product that does not require electricity. Using gravity and attaching to the bottom of #water containers, the filters can provide up to 10,000 litres.

1/14. 📜Powerful new report to the #UN General Assembly by the @SRClimateChange Ian Fry makes crystal clear that #LossAndDamage from #ClimateChange is causing a litany of #HumanRights impacts. 🧵
2/14. In its introduction, the report highlights the inequality at the heart of the #ClimateCrisis: "50% of countries are responsible for 86 % of the cumulative global CO2 emissions", #AtmosphericColonization, and why #ClimateReparations are being demanded for #LossAndDamage.
3/14. Chapter three "#LossAndDamage: a litany of #HumanRights impacts" starts by highlighting that from a #HumanRights perspective #LossAndDamage is "closely related to the right to remedy and the principle of #Reparations".

Whenever there are floods, a faction of propagandists start propagating that #Dams are the only solution for #FloodsInPakista.
I don't possess expertise in civil engineering, but to some certainty I know dams can't mitigate #floods. Dams can only store naturally flowing waters.
Floodwaters can neither be stored in dams nor stopped. Stopping floodwaters is dangerous and multiplicate the destruction. Even, there are numerous instances when poorly built #dams collapsed due to floodwaters.
#Pakistan has the largest number of #glaciers in the world.
#FloodsInPakistan are due to #GlobalWarming coupled with poorly built infrastructure and urban planning.

One year anniversary!
It started with a huge loss and ended with a huge loss for me. In btw I helped more than 450 families with food packages, few with medicine and other stuff. Just today, I provided meals to more than 350 people. Take part by donating:
aseelapp.com/en_us/urgent-f…
Packing the food. In my neighborhood more than 200 houses are damaged. People are affected a lot. So much losses incurred. People need help not only with food items but in rebuilding their houses. I will do my part as long as I can. I need your contributions. #Afghanistan
Together with my team, we delivered food to families who were gravely impacted by the flood. I remain hopeful that with your contributions, I will be able to help them more and lessen their pain and grief. Plz donate and share the campaign link with anyone who can help.

A climate 🧵.
Are you wondering why and how #climatechange can worsen /both/ floods and droughts?
Here's a short explainer:
1/9
#floods #droughts
First, both droughts and floods occur naturally as extremes of weather. As humans have started to change the climate, we're affecting both extremes.
2/9
Droughts are worsening in some places for two main reasons. First, higher temperatures from global warming dry out soils, increase evaporation of water, accelerate snowpack loss, & more. Second, changes in atmospheric circulation divert rains away from some regions. Both...

Pretty disappointed with how #TheBusiness portrayed me. I told a much larger story than this, and though it is well summed up with an angst around affordability that doesn’t go away, including rent, petrol, food, essentials (not mentioned) it was so much more than that. #auspol
There was no mention of the #RoyMorgan #unemployment statistic of 8.5%, nor that the ABS figure of 4% is fanciful in not counting anyone as unemployed who works just one hour a week, or has weeks off having worked in the gig economy, or who is sick, injured, etc. #auspol
That employees are working those #jobs created by the need to clean up after the recent #floods. That right now employment going down - is to be expected - as the #casual labour market has soaked up the extra workers needed and under and unemployed people have stepped up. #auspol

Living and experiencing the #floods in #Mullumbimby was/is the most insane experience of my life.

Still so raw. I lost my home. When it first happened I was trapped in my house and had to break off the door...
Then escaped in my wetsuit w surfboard

This is my experience:
🧵
2/ I live 2 streets from Mullumbimby town centre.
The biggest issue for all of us was no warning.
The only reason I knew this might happen was because I was following Higgins Storm Chasers on Facebook.
Our weather apps and BOM said 40mm and maybe mild to moderate flooding.
3/ I picked up sandbags on the Sunday afternoon but the SES had hardly any sand, we were the only people there and, when I asked what they thought, they just said maybe we might but they always say it and just shrugged their shoulders.
