No-one has been "banned", & it's nothing to do with our "education system".
The irony of dangerous extremist Nigel Farage - our very own shit-stirring 21st century Oswald Mosely - describing a decision taken BY STUDENTS to drop Winston Churchill as a house name as "dangerous".
LIAR Nigel Farage has used racism, xenophobia, sexism & Islamophobia to stir up division, has toxic connections to extreme & far-right figures across the world, & Thatcherite beliefs that he has tried to hide from communities in former industrial towns.
Farage on LBC Radio, 2014: “I was asked if a group of Romanian men moved in next to you, would you be concerned? And if you lived in London, I think you would be”. Asked whether he would object to living next door to German children, he replied “You know what the difference is”.
He LIED in 2014 by claiming that parts of Britain were “unrecognisable” & “like a foreign land”.
The childish baby also said he felt “awkward” when he heard people speaking other languages on the train - despite bragging about his wife & children speaking "perfect German".
Asked in a 2014 interview who he thought should be allowed to come to the UK, he said: “People who do not have HIV, to be frank. That’s a good start".
Then during the 2015 General Election campaign, he deployed misleading statistics about foreigners with HIV in a TV debate.
Farage unveiled his infamous Breaking Point poster in the lead up to the EU referendum, which was eerily similar to #Nazi propaganda.
Farage refused to apologise, knowing full well that this kind of deliberately dangerously polarizing propaganda hadn't been seen since the Nazis.
Farage collaborated with Leave.EU, run by Farage’s pal Arron Banks & co-founded Richard Tice, which relentlessly linked immigrants & Muslims to violence & societal decline - just like all the other dangerously extremist populist nationalist cranks across Europe.
Farage loves Enoch Powell. Farage asked Powell for his support in a by-election in 1994, & drove Powell to a UKIP rally in 1993, writing: “That meeting, with a man who had achieved so much & sacrificed so much for his principles, awoke all sorts of aspirations in me".
Awakened?
Farage said in 2008:“While his (Enoch Powell) language may seem out of date now, his principles remain good & true”, & that “I would never say that Powell was #racist in any way at all."
In 1968 a "spontaneous" pro-Powell march was actually organised by fascist extremists.
The MI5 reports also described the anti-Powellite counter-campaign led by communist dockers' leaders. Government ministers argued about whether Powell should be prosecuted for his speech, which referred to the "menace" of "charming wide-grinning #piccaninnies".
Sounds familiar.
Farage agreed with parts of the Rivers of Blood speech, claiming that the “basic principle” was correct, spoke glowingly of Powell, & has even recited sections of the speech from memory.
As a schoolboy, Farage's teachers accused him of being “racist” & “fascist”.
I wonder why?
A letter about him said “Another colleague, who teaches the boy (Farage) described his #publicly#professed#racist & neo-#fascist views; & he cited a particular incident in which Farage was so offensive to a boy in his set, that he had to be removed from the lesson."
"Yet another colleague described how, at a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) camp organised by the college, Farage & others had marched through a quiet Sussex village very late at night shouting #Hitler-youth songs.”
Farage formerly had a column at #Breitbart, the grotesque far-right, anti-immigrant “news” outlet, formerly owned by his longtime ally & "proud racist" conspiracy theorist crank Steve Bannon, & formerly headed in the UK by his ex-aide & far-right nutjob Raheem Kassam.
Ignoring the last thirty years, Farage actually defended a UKIP candidate’s use of the slur “ch*nky”.
Can you see what he is yet?
Following the Westminster attack, Farage spoke of a “fifth column living inside these European countries” on Fox News.
Farage IS the fifth column.
“If you open your door to uncontrolled immigration from Middle Eastern countries, you are inviting in terrorism”, said Farage in another shit-stirring speech
The monstrous twat also opportunistically made repellant “fifth column” comments in the wake of the 2015 Paris attack.
Just after the Referendum result was announced, disgustingly, Farage Gaslit the grieving family of Jo Cox & the whole country, stating that Brexit had been won “without a single bullet being fired" - just over a week after Jo had been assassinated by a far-right extremist.
In 2017, Farage claimed he would “don khaki, pick up a rifle and head for the front lines” if May failed to deliver Brexit “properly”, claiming “there will be widespread public anger in this country on a scale and in a way we have never seen before”.
In September 2019, Farage told a rally of supporters in South Wales that “once Brexit is done, we will take the knife” to “overpaid pen-pushers in Whitehall”.
Guns?
Knives?
He knows exactly what he's saying. He thrives on outrage culture - as do all dangerous extremists.
But he's not JUST racist, he's also sexist! Of course he is!
Farage defended Trump’s “grab them by the pussy” remarks as “locker room banter”.
Farage also told women to “sit in the corner” if they wanted to breastfeed their children, in order not to be “openly ostentatious”.
Asked about women’s footy, Farage said: “Here’s the bigger question. Do we think, chaps, when we’re there in the front line, when the balloon goes up, with fixed bayonets, when the whistle’s about to blow to go over the top, do we actually want to be there with women beside us?"
"I certainly don’t think so. But maybe it’s because I’ve got so many women pregnant over the years that I have a different view. I find it very difficult to think that we could stand up & run over the top together, into the machine guns or whatever. Men & women are different!"
In 2013 Farage lied by saying “I have never ever said ‘Britain is full’, I’ve never ever used that term” after calling for the government to offer refuge to Syrian Christians caught in the war.
A video soon surfaced of him using the phrase “Britain is full” just months earlier.
In May 2016, Farage said he would back a second referendum if the margin of victory for the winning side was small. Farage told the Mirror “In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way. If the Remain campaign win two-thirds to one-third that ends it”.
In May 2019, Farage WAS labelled a “terrible, terrible human being” by a pub landlord, who alleged that Farage had fled the scene of a head-on car crash. “He didn’t even bother to see if me & my little boy were OK. He just upped & left”.
Despite banging on about "the elite" - as all extremist populist nationalists do - Farage is actually very much part of the elite, but likes to pretend he isn't by holding a pint & doing his pathetic "man of the people" act.
Fake Farage is actually the son of a wealthy stockbroker, and attended Dulwich College - one of the most elite schools in the whole country, which several family members had also attended.
Farage went on to send his sons to boarding school.
Nigel 'man of the people' Farage became a City trader - as you do if you're not part of the elite - after reportedly being offered the job by a man he met on a golf course.
How spiffing. Who says a private education at a vey posh school doesn't open doors?
"Things hadn’t really changed much since PG Wodehouse’s book Psmith. The character created by Wodehouse, like me, an old boy at Dulwich College, said that people in the City spend their mornings choosing where to go for lunch & their afternoons telling everyone how good it was.”
In 2016 man of the people Farage threw a party at the Ritz, at which he decried the “career, professional political class” to a room full of billionaires & multi-millionaires - who love him because he keeps voters divided, thus helping them carry on exploiting & hoarding wealth.
In 2017 he lied yet again - this time about being“skint”, even though the International Business Times estimated that he had a net worth of £2.4m the previous year.
Farage also said in 2017 that he would not relinquish his pension from the EU.
In July 2018 it was revealed that Farage was the highest earning MEP outside the European Parliament of any of the 73 British MEPs, & 7th highest overall.
This was before all his grifting media work, which had paid him between £524,000 & £700,000 in the previous four years.
Despite being "broke", in 2019 Farage took a private plane to Strasbourg, saying he “can’t remember” how much it cost, claiming to have paid it himself.
He later tweeted that he had been reimbursed by an unnamed businessman.
In 2013 it was revealed that man of the people Farage had set up an offshore trust fund on the Isle of Man, claiming that his “financial advisors recommended I did it”, & in 2016 he refused to release his tax returns in the wake of the #PanamaPapers tax avoidance scandal.
While conman Farage portrays himself as the champion of the disaffected working class, he's as Thatcherite as they come. Remember? Thatcher? The woman who smashed the unions, turning Britain from one of the most equal Western countries to one of the least?
Mr ANTI-GLOBALIZATION in 2018: “I was in business, I supported Margaret Thatcher’s modernization & reforms of the economy. It was painful for some people, but it had to happen, & it brought us into the modern world. I worked in a very global business, the most global of the lot.”
Farage said in 2012 that the UK should move to a private insurance-based health service, & has called for private companies to “relieve the burden on the health service”.
He's backed private healthcare on numerous occasions.
Farage has an unseemly sycophantic relationship with Trump, who he calls his “friend”.
Farage relentlessly fawned over Trump, praising him for having “dominated” Hillary Clinton “like a big silverback gorilla prowling the stage” in a debate.
Mr Patriotic man of the people has also said that “Since the election of Donald J. Trump, every time I come to America, I’m feeling a little bit more American”.
He's a chancer, a grifter, who will say whatever people want to hear. He cares more about the USA than the UK.
And like any well-behaved far-right-lapdog-wannabe-neo-Nazi, Farage defended Trump’s grotesque Islamophobic outbursts.
When Trump retweeted a post from far-right Britain First, Farage called the outrage “out of all proportion” & “ridiculous”.
Of course he did.
After Trump told four congresswomen of colour to “go back & help fix the totally broken & crime infested places from which they came,” Farage said he realised Trump’s comments were “genius”, that he “does things his way”, & called him “a remarkably effective operator”.
Despite railing against Barack Obama for “monstrous interference” in the 2016 Referendum, hypocrite Farage had Trump on his LBC show at the start of the 2019 General Election campaign, during which Trump said how Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal might affect UK/USA trading relations.
Farage is a longtime associate of Trump’s former advisor & dangerous far-right fruitcake Steve Bannon.
The day article 50 was triggered, Farage thanked Bannon & Breitbart, stating “Well done Bannon, well done Breitbart, you’ve helped with this hugely”.
In 2017, Bannon offered Farage a role helping to “knit together this populist nationalist movement throughout the world”, saying he'd be “the perfect guy” to front it. Bannon mentioned Modi, Orban, & Rodrigo Duterte as part of the movement.
GLOBAL POPULIST NATIONALIST MOVEMENT!
On Bannon’s bequest Farage addressed an event for homophobe & Islamophobe Roy Moore event in 2017.
Farage said Moore’s election was “important for the whole global movement across the West that we have built up & we have fought for.”
GLOBAL POPULIST NATIONALIST MOVEMENT!
Moore was accused by six women of pursuing romantic sexual relationships with them when they were teenagers, including one from a woman who was fourteen, when he was in his 30s; two accused him of assault or molestation. Farage still campaigned for him.
Farage openly supported Marine le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front, in the 2017 French presidential elections, & provided her a friendly interview on LBC. Farage said “she has a huge amount in common with firstly the Brexit campaign & secondly with President Trump”.
Farage supported le Pen despite saying in his 2015 book, that whilst “the problem is not with Marine […] the fact remains that #antisemitism is in the party’s DNA”, & “The National Front is still a party that is fundamentally about #race – the EU is an afterthought.”
Predictably, Farage addressed an event of the far-right, anti-Muslim AfD in Berlin in 2017, after he was invited by the AfD’s Beatrix von Storch, granddaughter of Hitler’s finance minister, who also welcomed him to the stage during the rally.
Ress-Mogg RTd a video from the AfD.
In 2016 Farage himself welcomed von Storch into his Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy group in the European Parliament, saying “I’ve watched the rise of the AfD with fascination, with interest, and I’ve been cheering on from the sidelines”.
In 2017 Farage claimed he “admires” nativist authoritarian populist nationalist Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orbán, saying that he is “the strongest and best leader in the whole of Europe”.
He told Orbán “Come and join the Brexit club, you’ll love it!”
The Council of Europe has called out Hungary for human rights violations in respect of the treatment of immigrants, who have been denied basic necessities such as food, as well as for new laws targeting the homeless (who are predominantly disabled, immigrants, refugees & Roma).
The European Parliament has opened the possibility of sanction proceedings after new laws were introduced by Orban threatening the independence of the country’s judiciary & media.
Despite the clear anti-democratic dangers, as well as Farage, the Tory Govt seem supportive too.
Always the shit-stirring grifter, Farage has made six appearances on InfoWars, the American conspiracy show run by far-right pundit & Trump fanatic Alex Jones: “the most prolific conspiracy theorist in contemporary America”.
Among Alex Jones' conspiracy theories are: that the London 7/7 bombings were a British government plot; the Sandy Hook shooting was staged; high ranking figures in the Democratic Party ran a child sex ring out of a pizza shop; & 9/11 was an inside job, carried out by the US govt.
The dangerously polarizing tactic of scapegoating & demonization is used by ALL far-right populist nationalists, in order to divide people up into "us" (brave (non-religious) 'Christian' patriots defending our country) & "them" (alien Islamic invaders helped by the hateful Left).
Asked by Jones “Why is the left allied with radical Islam?”, Farage LIED: “Because they hate Christianity. They deny, absolutely, our Judeo-Christian culture, which if you think about it actually are the roots, completely, of our nations & our civilisation."
Neo-Nazi rhetoric.
Shit-stirring far-right extremist liar Farage also went on to say that: "They (the Left) also want to abolish the nation state – they want to get rid of it. They want to replace it with the globalist project, & the EU is the prototype for the new world order.”
Utter bullshit.
Since Brexit & Trump's defeat, Farage has groped about trying to find his way back into well-paid shit-stirring extremism.
He had some mild "success" by hanging about the channel making pathetic far-right videos of asylum seekers, & framing it as some kind of "invasion".
Since Trump's defeat, the UK is now being targeted by the same money, groups, & individuals that spent 4 years trying to turn the USA into a polarized kleptocracy - & they nearly succeeded.
Farage no doubt hopes #GBNews & other investments in division will revive his "career".
This has been going on under our noses for years now.
If you STILL can't see the similarities between today & 1930s Germany, you're either blind, or you're a populist nationalist, or you know NOTHING about European history.
The 2020 Edelman Trust Barometer Spring Update makes interesting reading.
The survey was conducted between April 15-23, sampling more than 13,200 college-educated respondents in 11 markets: Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, S. Korea, UK & USA.
67% of respondents believe that those with less education, less money & fewer resources are bearing a disproportionate burden of the suffering, risk of illness & need to sacrifice in the pandemic, & more than half are very worried about long-term, #Covid-related job loss.
Revitalizing the economy is important, & health & safety is paramount. 67% of respondents want saving lives prioritized over saving jobs, and 75% say CEOs should be cautious in getting their companies back to normal, even if it means waiting longer to reopen workplaces.
A THREAD about the history of the UK press & journalism, focusing on how the 'radical press' transformed Britain.
I believe we're experiencing something similar now, with outlets like @BylineTimes, @DoubleDownNews & many others challenging the dominant free-market narrative.
A bit of context.
The Guttenberg print press, invented in 1440, changed everything.
Ordinary people now had access to information, ideas & narratives from all sorts of perspectives, thus breaking the stranglehold on the elite's domination.
Gradually at first, there was a profound shift from oral/visual culture toward print culture – kickstart age of reason, & it was transformative, giving birth to the Renaissance & the Enlightenment, & in the17th century gave rise to early #journalism.
"Flag-signalling" - the practice of ostentatiously using a flag ostensibly to signify one's patriotic character, when its primary function is to encourage acquiescence from "the people" in passively accepting their own subjection & exploitation by manipulative opportunist elites.
A clear, concise & well-written & article by sociologist Arianna Piacentini, on the rise of (populist) nationalism & right-wing populism across Europe - a trend which, given Europe's history over the last century, should concern us all.
Arianna starts by saying #populism has become ‘the concept that defines our age’, & the electoral surges of right-wing populist parties have been branded a ‘populist zeitgeist’.
Yet populism is - as I've said elsewhere - a slippery concept, featuring both the right & the left.
On the Right, we have parties such as the Hungarian Fidesz, the French National Front or the Italian Northern League. On the Left, Syriza in Greece & Podemos in Spain - as well as seemingly 'non-ideological' anti-establishment actors such as the 5 Stars Movement in Italy.
#Outrage is the most profitable emotion: pundits, columnists, politicians & advertisers are trying to make us angry.
It's partly why society is so polarized: to get attention (& ad-revenue, audiences, followers etc), say something controversial!
Trump turned it into an artform.
Sparking outrage seems counter-intuitive when trying to sell or promote a product or an idea, but as Oscar Wilde said, the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.
84% of advertising isn't noticed - outrage gets people talking, or at least noticing.
Outrage sells newspapers & gains listeners. @Conservatives use it all the time.
It's partly why billionaires invest in people/organisations who say outrageous things, & it's why #GBNews will be deliberately provocative: it's 'good for business'.
Britain was a much more equal society before Thatcher than it has been at any time since.
In this short THREAD, I just want to try and quickly take stock of what forty years of increasingly deregulated free-market capitalism has actually achieved.
The attacks on the welfare state in the 1980s were based on views that saw poverty as the result of individual moral failings, rather than structural inequality. This narrative has become so dominant, it is now unusual to hear the Govt attach the prefix 'structural' to any issue.
Permanent jobs and decent pensions for the masses have become a thing of the past.
British manufacturing, once the envy of the world, has all but disappeared.
Around 10 million people are trapped in insecure, relatively low-paid work, with declining working conditions.
