Billionaire N. Murray Edwards was not without his own philanthropic efforts.
In 2012 he organized a fundraising dinner at Calgary’s Petroleum Club with oil, gas and pipeline companies helped raise more than $1 million to support Christy Clark in 1 night! thetyee.ca/Opinion/2017/0…
Since then Billionaire N. Murray Edwards has kept a lower profile with his political “philanthropy.”
Along with Billionaire Daryle Katz he’s used the Alberta Enterprise Group as a way to push policy and lobby government.
Among campaigns to support reactionary Conservatives like Stephen Harper, “in December 2011, AEG led a counter-boycott of Chiquita Bananas in response to the company signing on to an anti-oil sands campaign.”
Sometime around 2019, Billionaires N. Murray Edwards and Daryl Katz were joined at the AEG by a new lobby group made up of Jason Kenney’s former staffers called Wellington Advocacy.
“Jason Kenney’s corporate tax cuts are buoying the profits of Alberta’s biggest corporations, like CNRL, which is paying out big time to shareholders like billionaire Murray Edwards.”
While Billionaire N. Murray Edwards enjoys his tax breaks and looks forward to $99,622.12 from Calgary for each homeless person in the city, the homeless crisis drags on as it has done for years.
Mayor Nenshi is right that this is an important issue, and he’s right that it can be solved in just a few years if the political will is there, especially from the rest of #yyccc.
Here’s an old photo of him in Billionaire N. Murray Edwards’ sports jersey.
Of course it’s a well known fact that “addressing housing directly is cheaper than relying on cops and emergency rooms.”
(And #yyccc found $99,622.12 for every homeless person to fund a new house for Billionaire N. Murray Edwards’ sports team.)
While Billionaire Murray Edwards is away, and his sports team and revenue sources team plays on ice, some are still here trying to reduce homelessness.
Imagine having an opportunity to end homelessness and have a lasting legacy of fighing poverty but instead deciding to spend $613 Million to build a house for Billionaire Daryl Katz’s NHL team.
Sometimes I wonder what I could have achieved in life if I spent my time in university attacking the rights of women and the LGBTQ community while pandering to religious zealots before dropping out instead of, you know, studying.
I don’t actually wonder this.
But after years of being told an entry-level job requires 6 degrees and 10 years experience using industry-specific software that’s only existed for 2, I get why some find it frustrating to see drop-outs elevated to top positions in society.
Imagine being told that the only way you’ll have a career that enables you to provide for a family of your own is to take on MASSIVE debt get a university education.
So you do that, but still struggle to get your foot in the door.
The choice of the @calgarysun to post misinformation (the cover is an outright lie) from a Brian Lilley editorial is bad enough, but @CalgaryCoop you’ve chosen to subject your workers and customers to those lies.
"Today I decided to head up the Oldman to see what the coal companies have been getting up to. I forgot, however, that the forestry trunk road is closed at Dutch Creek each winter, ostensibly for wildlife protection. So I parked at the locked gate and started hiking."
