In 2019, WhatsApp alleged that #NSOGroup technology enabled the remote surveillance of civil society members via their phones, with several Indian journalists among the targets.

Indian journalist Shubhranshu Choudhary was notified by WhatsApp in late 2019 that he had been the target of a spyware attack.

He doesn’t know why he was targeted, or if the attack was successful.

Indian journalist Anand Teltumbde has faced harassment for his reporting, and has been jailed since April 2020 in retaliation for his journalism.

In 2019, Teltumbde reported WhatsApp had notified him of surveillance attempts via NSO Group technology.

At least 20 journalists are currently missing from countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

All but one of these journalists have disappeared from #Iraq, #Syria & #Lebanon.

Samir Kassab, a Lebanese cameraman and photographer for @skynewsarabia, went missing in #Aleppo, #Syria, on Oct. 15, 2013, along with Mauritanian reporter Iszhak Ould Mokhtar and their driver.

They have not been heard from since.
