Here are a few thoughts about what it’s like as a parent of young kids to live in Northern California where climate change is making massive wildfires a sadly predictable, annual occurrence. #CaliforniaFires #climatechange #thread
Woke up this morning to my 5 yo son asking us about the air. Yesterday his soccer was cancelled and we didn’t let him go to the park due to poor air quality (AQ). If you have small kids you can imagine the energy that's pent up even from 1 day of being stuck inside.
Like I said my son is five and literally every year of his life that he remembers, there have been days or weeks where we’ve had to reorganize our lives to deal with wildfire smoke. He has a whole vocabulary & understanding about fires and AQ I definitely didn't have at that age.

The Public Utilities Commission gave PG&E half a billion dollars to upgrade their infrastructure, but they decided to give half of it to share holders instead, and have been paying off our elected officials. That's why we have "preventative black outs". #CaliforniaFires
These are PG&E's donations to my opponent (Mike Thompson) through 2018.
If anyone would care to donate to our efforts to unseat a very corporate 20 year incumbent, who takes money from PG&E as well as drug companies, insurance companies, weapons manufacturers, Wall St banks, real estate companies and more, you can donate at kishineff.net

Watching Trump's remarks in CA just now I am so embarrassed. He doesn't even have the social grace (never mind the necessary protocol becoming his office) to call Jerry Brown, GOVERNOR Brown..what an ass. #CaliforniaFires washingtonpost.com/politics/trump…

THREAD: how to help wildfire efforts. Because of my background, I’ve been asked for my recommendations of best orgs to help with #wildfire relief. #CaliforniaFires #CampFireSmoke #ButteCountyFire #CalFire #firefighters
2- my focus was NorCal because this is the vastly more disastrous area. And there are obvious choices like the Red Cross. That said, I was most impressed by two organizations that I believe are worthy of your support and will immediately put to use.
3- the first org is @NVCF they only use 1% to admin fees and are in Chico. They are on the ground helping and they also provide support for animals. Nvcf.org

This year, like 2017, California has had an unusually hot & dry fire season. Most of the largest and most destructive wildfires in CA history have happened under such conditions. Climate change is making this situation worse.

#CaliforniaFires #ClimateChange
I also created an animated version which helps to emphasize how weather conditions during California's fire season have evolved over time. #CaliforniaFires #ClimateChange
Weather data for these images is taken from @NOAA's Climate at a Glance Data Explorer, e.g. ncdc.noaa.gov/cag/statewide/….

Information on the ranking of wildfires comes from @CAL_FIRE.

1/16 I live in #California and while not in harm’s way of the #CaliforniaFires, I empathize. Yesterday while driving to the post office, I heard on the radio about the people who died in their cars because they couldn’t make it out in time.
2/16 I teared up in front of the post office worker, it just freaking hit me while we were chatting. People burned alive, not because they ignored an order to evacuate, but because the fires were simply that fast.
3/16 The kind postal worker and I shared a moment—talked about loved ones and friends affected. She shared how her husband was helping people in their nearby community.

If Northern California had received anywhere near the typical amount of autumn precipitation this year (around 4-5 in. of rain near #CampFire point of origin), explosive fire behavior & stunning tragedy in #Paradise would almost certainly not have occurred. (1/n) #CAfire #CAwx
Rainy season has started late this year in California...again. While autumn precipitation isn't usually huge fraction of overall annual average, it's hugely important to ecosystems & in bringing "fire season-ending" moisture. This yr, autumn precip was <20-30% of avg. #CAwx (2/n)
Objective indicators of vegetation dryness and potential fire intensity were at record-high levels for the date this week in vicinity of #CampFire--and would have been very high even for peak summer levels--at a time of year when the rainy season is usually ramping up. (3/n)

I had never heard of a fire tornado until today and I really kind of hope I never see a firenado again in my life. This legitimately feels like biblical levels of destruction. #CaliforniaFires
My family is safe and hopeful this morning. We’re waiting to see what the condition of our house in Calabasas is but we have everything we need with our kids healthy and safe. This is going to be challenging for our community but we will all work through it together. #WoolseyFire
Just got word that as of now our house in Calabasas IS STANDING!!! It hasn’t had any fire damage as of now. We have to stay away for a few days because there’s still a real dangerous threat but for now it feels like a huge relief. #WoolseyFire
