TRUE: "Cutting methane emissions is the fastest way to slow warming."
NOT TRUE: "three relatively cheap ways to tamp down on emissions."

Misleading terms used: seep/seepage/leak

In 1995, I moved to a farm in Wise County where the “Father of #fracking” experimented with fracking.

I parked on the side of the road and I watched them, learned, documented, then researched.

My air turned brown and my water turned black.

earthisland.org/journal/index.…
For 20+ yrs, I directly observed #oilandgas operations. For 7+ years, I've made invisible #methane emissions visible with OGI technology.

I observed > formed questions > did research > formed a hypothesis > observed > collected data/evidence

Went public.
Got ridiculed.

leak
I was proven right when years later some scientist said it.

First I declared that #water used for #oilandgas was a permanent withdrawal from our active hydrologic cycle.

Ridicule > scientist confirms > I am 100% right.

earthworks.org/publications/n…
I rarely see emissions that could be accurately described as "seeps" or "leaks."

This is a leak and I only found it because I could get close.
This is a pipeline blowdown which is an allowed and routine release of methane.

This is NOT a fucking "leak" or "seepage."
I do not find "leaks" and "seeps." I found INTENTIONAL routine and allowed pressure releases, INTENTIONAL routine maintenance releases, INTENTIONAL dumping, equipment failures, emergency releases.
There are no easy fixes for methane releases. It will require CONSTANT monitoring, VIGILANT maintenance, 💰properly sized equipment, and an ARMY of motivated regulators ready to enforce regulations with meaningful penalties.

None of that is cheap or easy.

I 💯 am right
And most of all we must stop all new permits.

Good read on #methane and @APIenergy ...ALMOST.

The fact that oil and gas is still paying API to obstruct regulations and lie to the public is more PROOF that we should not believe any of their climate promises.

Here is where this article fails:

"staunching the flow of methane is achievable and affordable—commonly at the level of such basic things as swapping component parts, monitoring for leaks, and stopping venting and flaring."

Sound simple? The author is an analyst.

I want to talk to you about blowdowns. (Be careful with that word in presentations. I've slipped a time or two.) 😳

During a blowdown all the #methane in a facility's system is released into the atmosphere.
Blowdowns may be scheduled for maintenance and repair, or they may be emergencies which happen quite often.

This video makes visible the normally invisible emissions from a pipeline blowdown

This @TCEQ emissions event report estimation covers a blowdown at an @EnergyTransfer #ClimateCriminals pipeline. The blowdown released 5866202.0 lbs of #methane.

I know you are a nice person, @arsetechnica who means well, so this thread is for you.

I oppose the death penalty but I'm not an expert so I listen to and donate to experts like you.

I'm an expert on health & #climate impacts from #oilandgas with over 16 yrs experience.
I worked for #oilandgas.
I was a directly impacted landowner and a mineral owner, which is how I became a health and environmental advocate.
I've been OGI certified for over 6 yrs and have more experience behind an OGI camera than most regulators and industry.
First I thought: Oh, this #fracking is a mess and someone needs to make them do it right. I co-authored Drill Right Texas. I had good intentions, but insufficient information.

#oilandgas promised in 2005 to stop the emissions that turned my air brown.

Looking back over a year of making invisible #methane emissions from #oilandgas visible.

Banks that helped fuel the #fracking boom begin to tighten revolving lines of credit.

Large #financial institutions are likely to decrease future loans to shale #oilandgas companies.

2/5 Small and midsize #fracking companies may be forced out of business, and banks fear #oilandgas assets may not cover loans.

JPMorgan has $44 billion in oil and gas loans, Capital One has $3 billion.

#oilandgas flimflam men are lying! Journalists should not repeat the lies!

They want the public to believe that natural gas is a solution for #climatechange.

IT IS THE PROBLEM.

U.S. GHG emissions are rising not decreasing as flimflammers claim. 1/4

cicero.oslo.no/en/posts/clima…
Natural gas is #methane or CH4 and it's a super pollutant that is over 86 X more potent at warming the planet than CO2. But, it doesn't stay in the atmosphere for very long and that's where the HOPE for STOPPING #climatechange is. 2/4
Because #methane is short-lived, if we STOP #fracking and #KeepItInTheGround our planet will have an immediate response and the rapid warming will slow giving us time to solve CO2 which stays in the atmosphere for a very long time. 3/4
