Here's a quick update on our Asia Currencies & Commodities views in partnership with @SGX, so you can keep an update on the markets that matter🐝
[1a] #China: policy easing continues. The PBoC became the first central bank to cut rates in 2022 with a 10bps cut in the one-year medium-term lending facility (MLF) to 2.85%. This was the first cut since the height of the Covid stress in March 2020. Yet $CNH remains stable.
[1b] We remain neutral on CNH given that the ongoing C/A surplus and equity inflows are offsetting declining yield support. Image
[2] We think our long SGX $KRW/USD futures recommendation has further to run with an increasingly hawkish BoK and improved foreign equity inflows. Image
[3] We remain bearish on the rupee $INR with further Covid restrictions and still-elevated oil prices, retaining our short SGX INR/USD futures (XIDF2, Feb22).
[4] USD/TWD (New Taiwan dollar) has yet to decisively break through 27.6. And with CBC intervention likely to continue, we remain neutral.
[5] S$NEER has continued to strengthen. With domestic equity strength, ongoing reopening and elevated inflation, we remain bullish and stay short USD/SGD by selling the SGX USD/SGD minis (XSDG2, Feb22) #Singapore
[6] On commodities: #iron ore settles into a $120s/tonne range; in our last report, we favoured long iron ore futures positions (SCOG2, Feb22). The trade is up 5% over the past two weeks, and we continue to hold it. Also, #coal bounces back above $700/tonne. Image
[7a] Those expecting the global economy to slow going forward should continue to look to #copper, which remains stuck in the same elevated range it has occupied for about a year. That this has occurred alongside huge swings in other industrial commodity prices is unusual.
[7b] #Copper therefore appears to have much more potential downside if the activity data begin to confirm that a general global slowdown is materialising.

Where does #inflation, US Treasuries and markets go from here? John Welch shared his rather unconventional view exclusive to Macro Hive.

Given how important this is, here's a quick summary:
[1] In an era of massive QE, we cannot ignore Milton Friedman’s warning that ‘inflation is always everywhere a monetary phenomenon.’
[2] Chart 2 shows the evolution of two measures of money: 1) the monetary base (MB), comprising the monetary liabilities of the central bank, and 2) M2, which includes currency in circulation, demand deposits, time deposits, money market accounts, and other liquid deposits. Image

Awesome new IMF working paper exploring the connection between crypto and equity markets, comparing pre- and post-pandemic period - we just had to write a Hive Deep Dive summary!

Here are some key takeaways 🧵
[1] Starting with simple correlations, the intra-day price #Bitcoin and #Ether, is now about 4-8 times more correlated with the volatility of the main US equity market indices (the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Russell 2000) versus 2017-19. Image
[2] Intra-day returns have also become more correlated, particularly $BTC. While the correlation between Tether & equities also strengthened, it turned negative during the pandemic – implying people used it as a risk diversification asset in that period. Image

Grey Swans are those low-probability, high-impact events that few expect.

Last year, we had picked 10 Grey Swans for 2021. Amazingly, some materialised. Notably, the Democrats won the Senate, and inflation surged.

Here are our 12 for this year 👇

Pundits are Wrong! US Enters a #Recession in 2022

Almost no one is looking for a US recession in 2022. Economists’ consensus assigns only a 15% probability. Clearly, most expect US growth to lose momentum. So why not expect a US recession?

With a Magic Wand: COVID All But Disappears

Virus mutation, natural immunity and vaccines are all reasons why the pandemic could end next year according. #COVID could also just disappear like other viruses have! (Think SARS)
