#ThreadAlert
Over the past few months, @SFLCin has received information that the mobile Internet is frequently suspended in various regions of Kashmir for nearly 10 hours every day. Here's a brief thread on the situation.

#KeepItOn #LetTheNetWork #InternetShutdowns
@SFLCin found that the areas facing such suspensions are Anchar, Eidgah, Qamarwari, Soura, MR Gung, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Bagyass of Srinagar district; Wanpoh of Kulgam district, Qaimoh and the Litter area in the Pulwama district of Kashmir.

#InternetShutdowns #KeepItOn
This trend has been going on since August 2021. Apart from a couple of news articles, there hasn’t been any official order published regarding this. @SFLCin filed an application under the RTI Act to obtain orders of shutdown in November 2021 but haven't received a reply so far.
A concerned citizen sent across the screen recordings in the below video which show that the mobile internet hasn't been working in Srinagar.

The dates of the recordings are January 21, 22, 24, 25; February 1, 4, 6, 14 and 21. We urge the authorities to look into the matter and ensure that no such disruption occurs.

#KeepItOn #LetTheNetWork
Here’s a news article confirming that the residents of downtown Srinagar have been facing arbitrary mobile internet shutdowns.

Kashmir Observer has also reported that the locals from Safa Kadal area of Srinagar city confirmed to have been witnessing mobile internet shutdown on a daily basis from 3 pm onwards for the past four months.

#Haryana Government in its order stated that #Internet along with SMS services are being suspended to control fake rumours and disinformation during the ongoing #farmersagitation. The internet however is much more than social media.
#keepiton
The Internet has become a means of livelihood for people especially during the pandemic where the majority of citizens are still working and studying from home. Internet is used to verify information as well.

Internet shutdown cannot be used as a tool to suppress dissent. This is a violation of the right to freedom of speech and expression as well as the right to life. The impact of such shutdowns on citizens and the economy is huge.

The restoration of #4G in only a couple of districts in the Union Territory is discriminatory and denies citizens a basic necessity in these times of the pandemic.
#LetTheNetWork #KeepItOn #internetshutdown #JammuAndKashmir #Restore4GinJammuKashmir
The human and economic costs of these restrictions are huge and these actions are not at all proportionate. We hope that the Government will respond to the rightful demand to restore high speed Internet access in the region.

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has 20+ districts and restoring high speed in one district each in Jammu and Kashmir region is not enough with a review only happening after 2 months. #LetTheNetWork

A Year of #InternetRestrictions
An #Internetshutdown is more than just a disconnection from Whatsapp, Facebook or Twitter; it means limiting access to knowledge and learning opportunities.

Confined to their homes, students have found it challenging to study online with the painstakingly slow internet connections, which also faces frequent outages.

With limited connectivity, Higher Education is struggling event more. Students who have to prepare for competitive exams can't attend coaching classes physically due to the #Pandemic & the Internet is not fast enough for online classes.

A Year of #InternetRestrictions
#JammuandKashmir had 213 days of the complete internet blackout after which only 2G internet was restored in the valley. This year long communication block has caused immense damage to the citizens of the erstwhile UT.
#LetTheNetWork #KeepItOn Image
Students have lost many hours of their education, people have lost their livelihoods, the media has been severely crippled, the economy has suffered immensely & businesses have collapsed in the absence of a stable #internet connection.

As #DigitalIndia is becoming a reality, it is important to understand that maximum efforts have to be made to make the internet a safe space for everyone. #FreedomOfSpeech & #FreedomOfExpression expression shouldn't be diluted over the internet.
