#China today has city-wide #Covid lockdowns in place in #Shenzhen (12.5 million people), #Dongguan (10.5 million), #Langfang (5.5 million) + a province-wide lockdown in #Jilin (24 million residents). Also quasi-lockdown provisions, in #Shanghai (26 million) & #Xian (13 million).
In addition, there are #Covid restrictions in cities right across #China from localised housing community lockdowns to the closure of bars and restaurants, schools shifting to online classes etc. Many cities also carrying out mass testing.
As #China’s officials continue to pursue a “zero-#Covid” strategy aiming for elimination in each outbreak, there’re more than 50 million residents under strict, stay at home, lockdown today. Then add those under softer “quasi-lockdown” measures that’s more like 90 million people.
I should add that there are also smaller towns and counties also on #Covid lock down around #China. They are in addition to the lockdown locations listed above.
There there is the city of #HongKong, with its own #Covid restriction measures in place. You add this all up and it comes to a pretty significant #Covid lockdown of huge parts of #China’s economy.
Other #Covid lockdown impacts in #China include all international flights into #Shanghai now being diverted to other cities for the time being.
Another way of looking at it, I can only find three of #China's provinces - #Xinjiang, #Ningxia & #Tibet (TAR) - which do not have officially declared #Covid infections at the moment. #Omicron is officially everywhere in this country, except for the more remote regions.
You wonder, at what point, people in #China might become totally jack of "Zero-#Covid" making the strategy not sustainable? Chinese citizens, like say #Australia or #NewZealand, have mostly adhered to the rules when fighting the pandemic but we're into our 3rd year of it now.
I also wonder about #China's real vaccination rate. I met two locals at a function last Friday night who'd not been vaccinated (they weren't connected) & had the stupidest reasons for this. One said he didn't need to because everyone else was vaccinated now. Ignorance to the max.
Update Wednesday: #Shanghai appears to be locking down housing compounds one at a time for mass #Covid testing: two tests in 48 hours. If negative just monitor heath for 12 days. If positive cases are detected: it’s one week strict lockdown there then one week monitoring. #China

The whataboutism hitting social media from those who can’t bear to criticise Vladimir Putin for invading another country and bombing civilian communities is something to behold. Even a child can understand that one evil act doesn’t excuse another. It’s pretty simple.
For example, here’s what they’re making excuses for... #UkraineRussiaWar

#China’s Embassy in #Ukraine says it’s now started to get groups of Chinese citizens out of the country. #Russia #UkraineRussiaWar
That China is only getting its people out now could in mean 1: #Beijing initially felt it was important not to upset #Russia by prematurely getting Chinese people out of Ukraine or 2: #China did not expect #Moscow to attack all of #Ukraine?
Or possibility no 3: Could it mean #China thought that #Russia would take #Ukraine so quickly that it would not necessitate Chinese people leaving (hence the early advice to put Chinese flags on cars)? NOTE: this would've been a risky strategy because even a quick war is deadly.

In #Beijing today Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin told a regular press briefing that #Russia and #China are "strategic partners" but not "allies". He said China would not interfere in the #Ukraine crisis.
Asked if #China was neutral in terms of the #UkraineRussiaWar, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin said: "China is always on the side of peace and justice". #Russia #Ukraine
Asked about the removal of some of #Russia's banks from the SWIFT system because of the country's invasion of #Ukraine, #China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman said: "We do not endorse sanctions as a means of solving problems. China and Russia will continue normal trade cooperation".

#China’s Communist Party media is promoting a statement from #Russia’s Embassy in #Beijing. The statement refers to the “Neo Nazi’s” who “seized power in #Ukraine” in 2014 and how the Government in Kyiv “launched a war on its own people”.
The message from #Russia’s embassy in #China says that Russia’s forces are now “taking necessary actions to end the pain” of Russian speaking people in #Ukraine’s east. It calls on the world not to assist the “neo Nazi” government in #Kyiv.
#Russia’s embassy in #China also warns other nations “thinking of intervening in Russia’s military actions - don’t intervene. Otherwise you will soon face the most miserable consequences in history”. #UkraineRussiaWar #Ukraine

#China’s #Ukraine embassy has changed its instructions to its citizens inside the war-torn country. As I reported a few days ago, it was telling people to ‘post a Chinese flag on their car and "help one another out" while showing "China's strength"’. bbc.co.uk/news/world-asi…
Now #China’s #Ukraine Embassy is advising its citizens there: “do not freely reveal your identity or display identifying signs”. No flags? I wonder if #Beijing is worried about blowback on Chinese people there once word spreads that it has refused to criticise the invasion etc?
BTW, apart from the Chinese Government spokespeople attacking the mere use of the word “invasion” to describe what’s happening in #Ukraine, it wouldn’t take much for Ukrainians to see Chinese nationalist fanning of support for Putin in the Communist Party’s press in recent days.

What a disgraceful piece of garbage the Communist Party’s dirt rag the Global Times is. Anyone who works there should feel ashamed of themselves. Oh my god! I (wait for it) blocked a follower. The Govt here blocks all of Twitter because it distrusts Chinese people you imbeciles.
If people are interested in #China’s media, the best is Sixth Tone, Caixin etc and the absolute worst is the Global Times. Imagine a gutless, toilet paper tabloid with no ethics, then you give it the bully power of #China’s Communist Party... there you have the @globaltimesnews
To state the bleedin obvious: blocking someone on Twitter who attacks you isn’t threatening their freedom of speech. They can say whatever they like on Twitter but I don’t have to engage with it. Yet #China completely blocking Twitter destroys freedom of speech, denies knowledge.
