#HongKong’s leader Carrie Lam has announced she won’t “run” for another term (ie won’t be selected by a Communist Party approved committee). This means she will be retiring soon and a new leader will be appointed.
Carrie Lam will be known as the leader who instigated the 2019 political crisis in #HongKong by trying to push through a massively unpopular law allowing for extradition to mainland courts controlled by the Communist Party. She then governed as the upheaval got worse. #China
At the end of a calamitous year in 2019, Carrie Lam and her allies were obliterated at the ballot box (in the only real elections #HongKong had) losing control of all but one local council. She then did #Beijing’s bidding destroying that system to ensure no more proper elections.
But Carrie Lam’s attack on #HongKong’s freedoms went way beyond that, introducing a draconian state security law criminalising certain anti-government slogans, the wearing of certain t-shirts, the singing of certain songs. She has imprisoned scores of pro-democracy activists.
Those imprisoned in #HongKong under Carrie Lam’s (#Beijing’s) state security law include, for example, an activist suggesting on social media that residents light candles to mark the anniversary of the bloody 1989 #Tiananmen crackdown in #China.
Throughout her time in office, Carrie Lam has been known for doing #Beijing’s bidding and her parting gift to the city has been a complete mishandling of the #Covid crisis, trying to impose a mainland “zero Covid” approach for ideological reasons, even when it didn’t work.
Survey after survey have shown Carrie Lam as the least popular leader in #HongKong since the city was returned to #China.
It goes without saying that whoever is chosen (by a committee stacked with #Beijing loyalists) to replace Carrie Lam will also be completely under the control of the Chinese government, just as she has been.
While Carrie Lam has taken her marching orders from #Beijing, it's her name which will be linked to #HongKong's freedoms collapsing. Her administration caused the chaos of 2019, she refused to shift when millions of marched peacefully, driving up violence on the streets... [more]
Then it was under Carrie Lam that a new state security law obliterated all political opposition to the government, squashing the right to protest. She closed media outlets critical of her government and has been nobbling the independence of the judiciary.
The history of #HongKong will show Carrie Lam taking over a city with considerable freedoms and leaving it as place of state oppression, a shell of its former self. #China
Some analysis in this piece from me regarding the end of Carrie Lam's time as the leader of #HongKong and what it means for the city... #China. bbc.com/news/world-asi…
Naturally (I would've thought this is obvious) she isn't responsible for everything that happened in 2019 but Carrie Lam did start the upheaval with her extradition plan and refused to change it in the face of millions of people protesting thus contributing to the the escalation.

#Covid lockdown #Shanghai looks like something from a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie… #China.
Given the growing #Covid infection numbers in #Shanghai, the government’s current “Zero Covid” approach must surely mean a lot more lockdown time for the city’s 25 million residents. #China
Prior to the current East-then-West full shutdown for 4 or 5 days each, there were already parts of #Shanghai under #Covid lockdown. There will be more parts of the city locked down after the current mass testing of 25 million residents. #China #Omicron outbreaks growing.

After #Japan invaded #China if I had refused to call this an invasion or even a war and I repeatedly said all sides should simply “exercise restraint” would this have been on “the right side of history”? What about #Germany invading #Poland? news.cgtn.com/news/2022-03-2…
Serious question for the government of #China: could you explain precisely how you expect a country being invaded to “exercise restraint”? If #Ukraine “exercises restraint” there will be no #Ukraine. No? #UkraineRussiaWar #Russia
For those who’re saying, what about the politicians who appeased #Japan when it invaded #China... well yeah exactly. Now do you understand the concept?

#China today has city-wide #Covid lockdowns in place in #Shenzhen (12.5 million people), #Dongguan (10.5 million), #Langfang (5.5 million) + a province-wide lockdown in #Jilin (24 million residents). Also quasi-lockdown provisions, in #Shanghai (26 million) & #Xian (13 million).
In addition, there are #Covid restrictions in cities right across #China from localised housing community lockdowns to the closure of bars and restaurants, schools shifting to online classes etc. Many cities also carrying out mass testing.
As #China’s officials continue to pursue a “zero-#Covid” strategy aiming for elimination in each outbreak, there’re more than 50 million residents under strict, stay at home, lockdown today. Then add those under softer “quasi-lockdown” measures that’s more like 90 million people.

The whataboutism hitting social media from those who can’t bear to criticise Vladimir Putin for invading another country and bombing civilian communities is something to behold. Even a child can understand that one evil act doesn’t excuse another. It’s pretty simple.
For example, here’s what they’re making excuses for... #UkraineRussiaWar

#China’s Embassy in #Ukraine says it’s now started to get groups of Chinese citizens out of the country. #Russia #UkraineRussiaWar
That China is only getting its people out now could in mean 1: #Beijing initially felt it was important not to upset #Russia by prematurely getting Chinese people out of Ukraine or 2: #China did not expect #Moscow to attack all of #Ukraine?
Or possibility no 3: Could it mean #China thought that #Russia would take #Ukraine so quickly that it would not necessitate Chinese people leaving (hence the early advice to put Chinese flags on cars)? NOTE: this would've been a risky strategy because even a quick war is deadly.
