The 50th session of the @UN_HRC ended last week.

📌 #ClimateChange has been high on the agenda — from the presentation of @SRclimatechange's mapping report to the adoption of the annual resolution on climate & #HumanRights.

Here's a thread to recap what happened at #HRC50.
This was the last session of @UNHumanRights' Chief @mbachelet.

Her work has been instrumental in advancing a human rights-based approach to #ClimateAction: She stated that climate change is one of the greatest challenges to #HumanRights of our era.

The last week of the council started with an interactive dialogue on:
🔹#Racism,
🔹 The Sustainable Development Goals, &
where UN Special Rapporteur on Racism, E. Tendayi Achiume, also presented two 🆕 reports on these issues.
#HRC50 ended with the adoption by consensus of a resolution on #HumanRights & #ClimateChange.

Read our take 👇
Overall this @UN_HRC's session particularly stressed the human rights imperative for States to tackle the #ClimateChange impacts on people in vulnerable situations.
There's still much work to be done for countries to:
🔸 Truly implement a right-based approach to #ClimateAction,
🔸Tackle the #HumanRights impact of #ClimateChange,
🔸 Deliver effective & much-needed climate policies at the national & international levels.
Looking ahead to the next upcoming climate negotiations #COP27 we can only hope countries will hold to all the discussions that happened at @UN_HRC and take decisive steps to make sure to apply a rights-based approach to any #ClimateAction.

🆕 @VUamsterdam' s study found that nearly 80% of the meat & dairy products from farm animals tested by scientists contain #Microplastics.

🤯 Where does that plastic come from? Most likely it originates from livestock feed.

READ in @guardian.

2/4 - The presence of #Plastics in livestock could originate from the intentionally added #Microplastics in pesticides and fertilizers used to grow animal feed.

3/4 - In March, VUA researchers reported #Microplastics in human blood for the first time.

The discovery of the particles in blood shows they are ubiquitous in our environment, food, and bodies.

The subject? Mitigation of #ClimateChange.

#IPCC #ClimateReport #ActOnClimate
Like previous #IPCC Reports, this one demonstrates:

Three years ago, we joined partners around the world in releasing a landmark report that examined the impact of the full life cycle of plastic on health.

Read that report here: bit.ly/37timWo
#PlasticAndHealth #BreakFreeFromPlastic #WorldHealthDay2022 Image
From extraction to refining, use to waste management, plastics pose a serious health whether people experience them through direct or environmental exposure.

Since then, the needle has only moved.

Here's just some of the developments: Image
In 2019, scientists announced that the average person eats *at least* 50,000 particles of microplastic a year and breathes in a similar quantity. theguardian.com/environment/20…

730+ groups call upon global leaders to deliver #RealZero through rapid & permanent emissions cuts & real solutions, not dangerous techno-fixes, like carbon capture, blue hydrogen, geoengineering, or carbon markets & accounting tricks.
A thread 🧵
realsolutions-not-netzero.org
This call comes as governments and corporations at #COP26 unveil “#NetZero” climate pledges, many of which are being used to greenwash climate inaction and justify “business-as-usual” fossil fuel production.

#NetZeroIsNotZero #KeepItInTheGround
“Climate leadership will not be measured decades from now, but rather by the pace and scale of concrete, near-term actions taken today.”

It's time to invest in #RealZero solutions, no more techno-fixes, geoengineering, carbon markets, or accounting tricks.

700+ organizations are sending a clear message to our leaders gathered at #COP26: "No more far-off & empty #NetZero pledges. The time to commit to achieving #RealZero is NOW!"

Follow this thread to learn what are some of the key problems with the current #NetZero plans 🧵👇 Image: Petrochemical plant ...
1⃣ #NetZero = Avoid responsibility

The ‘net’ in Net Zero is being used by governments and industries to avoid responsibility for past, present, and future emissions and create a false sense of climate progress. Image
2⃣ #NetZero = Ignore the urgent need for action

Net Zero by 2050 simply means a pledge that in 30 years’ time, governments will offset that year’s pollution – with no guarantee they will substantially cut emissions in the decades preceding. Image
