My #FGM Heartbreak💔
"I Lost 2 Sisters To FGM!"
Halimatu Recalls Hers:
"I was born in #Liberia but due to the civil war, I was adopted by a Muslim couple from Sierra Leone when I was three years old.
I grew up there along with their three biological children.
My two elder sisters
and I were taken to our aunt's place. My sisters were 16 and 14, and I was 13 at the time. My 16-year-old sister stood up and ran away but our #Mother was the one to chase her and bring her back in. She was the first one they cut; the second one was my middle sister. I didn't see
when they were cutting them and I was the last. My eyes were tied and my foster mum took my hand and led the way. They asked me to lay down, which I obviously did. Suddenly, I felt this unbelievable pain. I started fighting and managed to pull the cloth from over my eyes: My aunt
sat on my chest and then, they cut me.
It's so painful it's impossible to bear. The even more upsetting part about it, is that they do these harmful things to #babies as young as 7 days old.
Then, they took me into a small room. My sisters were already there. When my elder sister
wanted to urinate, she started bleeding. Overnight it became worse. On the fourth morning my middle sister started bleeding. It was shocking. We were miles from the nearest town, they could not take them to #hospital or even seek medical help. According to the custom there, it is
taboo for a man to see you at that time. On the seventh day after the cutting, my middle sister died at the age of 14 … oh my God!
I became distracted from real life. When my elder sister died the following morning, my world changed. You know what? In that part of the bush, when
you die, it's your fault. The victim's fault - can you believe that? Since that day I have never been the same.
I've had two #Operations - for the births of my two children. I'm #Mother to a #daughter - and I would never even think about putting her through what I went through."

My #FGM TORTURE🩸
Agnes Pareyio Recalls Hers:
"I was 14 when my mom and grandma announced that I was going to have my clitoris, my labia majora and my labia minora cut out. They said that if I resisted I was a coward. In my culture, the worst thing you can be called is a coward.
On the day I was mutilated, I was woken up at three in the morning and taken outside, naked, because the villagers believed that if I felt the morning breeze on my body it would cool me and I would bleed less. I saw that the object they would cut me with was not sharp. I was not
offered any anaesthesia, but I was told not to cry – your father is in the house, they said, and he should never hear you cry.
I was determined to show I was not a coward, so I tried very hard not to show any emotion. As a result, I was cut deeper and I could not stop bleeding. I

"I Wanted To Kill Myself!"
Cecilia Ogore Recalls Hers:
"I was in my teen years when FGM was done to me; two women held my hands, one sat on my chest while the cutter squatted between my legs to circumcise me.
I felt a very sharp pain in my genitals; I cried
and bled a lot. I was confined to a room to recover because I wasn't #circumcised in the festive period.
You are expected to go out during festive periods and show that you are cut - that you are #mature!
As time progressed, I noticed that without knowledge, certain parts of my
clothing always became wet with stench of urine!
I will sometimes come down from a bus to discover that some areas on my skirt were stained and smelt of urine!
On close examination by a hospital in Uyo, #Nigeria, I was told I had VVF!
I did not know what it meant at first, it was

"I Wanted To Die..."
Hibo Wardere Recalls Hers:
"When I was six, a lot the #girls in my area had already had the procedure. They segregated you for not having been 'done' and told me I was unclean. After a while of these taunts, I asked my mother if I could have
it.
She said yes, and I thought it was a good thing.
A few days later, we had a big party and all the attention was on me. I felt really loved.
The next morning, I was woken up at about 5 o'clock and my #mother gave me a big breakfast. Three women walked in an hour later, because
they don't want to carry out the procedure when the sun is up.
I was taken to the makeshift hut where I was to stay until I had recovered. I was told to sit on the floor, in front of one of the three #women.
The minute I sat down, the #woman put her hands underneath my armpits to
#ICYMI: See How Cheap A Woman’s Life Is!😞 #Turkey: A Turkish court on Monday handed down a reduced sentence of 23 years to a man who killed his ex-lover on the grounds that the victim had “provoked” him.
Gültekin was strangled and then, set on fire by her ex-boyfriend, Avcı, who
confessed to the murder.
The court first handed down an aggravated life sentence to Avcı on charges of premeditated murder.
But the court later ruled to reduce his sentence to 23 years based on Article 29 of the #Turkish Penal Code (TCK) that is often used to reduce sentences for
#Men accused of such crimes on the grounds that the victim provoked the murder with her actions.
Avcı’s #family members who faced up to 5 years in prison for aiding and abetting, helping to cover his tracks and concealing evidence of the crime, have been acquitted of the charges.
