1/3 I am saddened to hear that @OPokalchuk had to resign as Head of @amnesty in #Ukraine, but proud of her for staying principled as always.
It really should be her French boss @AgnesCallamard quitting after making countless mistakes, wittingly or otherwise, in its latest report
2/3 Unlike many, I'm a supporter of @amnesty but occasionally any organisation gets things wrong
I don't think #Ukraine should be firing weapons from hospitals, but troops and weapons being close to civilians is unavoidable, indeed necessary.
The country already has to defend..
3/3
..itself without attacking the country which invades it. #Russia shows zero regard for human life: rapes, castrations, executions, bombing of bus stops, railway stations etc.
The way @amnesty's report was written was appalling. Some acknowledge it:
#Ukraine faces a 350km/220 mile frontline - imagine trying to defend that on your own against a country the size of #Russia which can toss thousands of cannon fodder in with no regard to losses of conscripts.
The Kremlin's released this video "showing the cleaning" of the town, but it doesn't show the centre, so it may still be contested
#Ukraine does admit in its' morning update that #Russia has made slight gains around #Bakhmut (RU: #Artemovsk) with constant fire from artillery and jets.
77 years ago today the first atomic bomb was used in war, in #Hiroshima.
Today #Russia fires heavy artillery at will from a Nuclear Power Plant, and according to #Ukraine, fires on the plant in #Enerhodar itself to cause provocation and blame the Ukrainians.
Earlier I showed a school #Russia had shelled in #Ukraine held #Donetsk region.
Now counter claims that #Ukraine has hit a school on Chervonopraporna Street (RU: Krasnoznamennaya) in north-west #Donetsk. No word yet on casualties, but no photos or video either.
The comatose "Head" of occupied #Kherson has been flown to #Moscow
Telegram channel #BAZA which broke the original story about collaborator Volodymyr Saldo's poisoning, say he'll be examined in the best chemical-toxicological lab in Russia to determine what he's poisoned with.
Another potential act of sabotage inside #Russia, and again in #Novosibirk where a freight train's derailed.
This happened near Barabinsk station of the West Siberian Railway. The train was carrying coal.
Photos from #Bakhmut (RU: #Artemovsk) show a small bridge has been destroyed. I don't know whether this was #Ukraine retreating into the city centre or advancing #Russians, but likely the former.
The date stamp has been removed, so it could be old.
The north east city of #Kharkiv was shelled again last night.
A warehouse was hit in #Slobidskyi district - but #Ukraine officials insist it was NOT a military target.
100% agree
"Lavrov says Russia is ready to discuss prisoner exchange with USA. They take athletes hostage for rolling cigarettes and try to exchange them for murderers + arms dealers.
Then they're outraged the whole world considers them a terrorist state
Also hearing today that something exploded at the central #Berdyansk police station.
The area was sealed off this morning. Many reported being woken by the sound of the suspected bomb.
No details released by the occupying administration, but no photos I can find either.
#Ukraine's Gov. of #Donetsk region has again denied Russian claims that they've captured all of #Pisky.
Pavlo Kirilenko says "there is constant shelling on the front line. Yes, it's very difficult in Pisky, but the command took additional measures to prevent the enemy advance."
A video has been obtained by @the_ins_ru which clearly shows #Russia's military sending trucks inside the Nuclear Power plant compound in occupied #Enerhodar.
Their sources say cargo was unloaded and weapons and ammo are now inside the plant.
The bulk carrier #Razoni, the first ship to legally leave #Ukraine's Black Sea ports with foodstuff, is nearing its destination of Lebanon.
The ship is currently off between #Turkiye's south coast, and the north coast of #Cyprus.
The Governor of #Kursk in #Russia says yet another sabotage has been prevented.
He says they foiled an attack on the military at the city's airfield.
However, no photos, no details and this governor has repeatedly talked nonsense so not even writing his name today.
#Turkiye's President admits he's signed a deal with Putin on economic cooperation with #Russia.
They say they intend to increase trade turnover to $100 billion.
Yet again Turkey happy for the war to continue and to reap the benefits #BloodMoney
Glorious free #Russia admits blocking access to the largest internet portal service in far east #Sakhalin.
There's been slowly growing discontent with Moscow for years.
Roskomnadzor restricted access to Sakh.com "due to calls for riots, extremism, mass rallies."
In #Kherson the #Ukraine resistance has managed to publish its first newsletter
"Voice of the Partisans" is a highly risky venture. Well done to the people who risk their lives to tell the truth. There is no access to any Ukraine media in the entire occupied region.
Another dreadful video is doing the rounds.
It seems impossible to verify, but @guardian among others, now reporting it after Gov of #Luhansk posted this on his Telegram channel
It's a screenshot, supposedly showing the head and hands of a Ukrainian on a fence in Popasna in July
Russia's state news agency says the Deputy Head of #NovayaKakhovka has not (yet) died but is critically ill after the assassination (attempt). This doesn't mean he is alive, as we've found out numerous times in the past.
Pro-Russian media are spreading information that #Ukraine is planning to fire on civilians in #Sloviansk tomorrow.
They say foreign journalists are already in the city and will be told it's a Russian attack.
Many now fear a genuine Russian attack with the Kremlin blaming Kyiv.
The Atomic Energy Agency issues a strong rebuke to #Russia (though they don't name them) after the video of tanks inside the nuclear power plant in #Enerhodar.
They also state their efforts to inspect have so far been denied
No way to say when this was recorded, or even if it is the town near #Donetsk. But it looks hellish doesn't it?
Clearly designed to dispel rumours about Russia having taken the town.
A little earlier, just before sunset, night came a little earlier in the district of #Hladkivka/#Gladkovka when one rocket saw a cloud of smoke envelope the wealthy suburb.
Looks like they've finally admitted Vitaliy Hura is dead after all! My original info about the traitor in #NovayaKakhovka was correct.
Another collaborator comes to a sticky end.
Meanwhile "Head" traitor of #Kherson remains poisoned in a Moscow clinic.
Wednesday. Day 1302 of the illegal war started by Russia.
For all the fact-checked news about Ukraine, analysis not sugar-coated, and honest appraisals of the situation, trust an expert who isn't here for clicks (if I was I'd post lies & gory videos).
Thanks for being #TeamTim
Yesterday an astonishing report from Yale showing Russia forcing kidnapped kids to work in drone factories, how Croatia may have embarrassed the Putin/ Hungary/Slovakia axis.
Those and many more stories in Tuesday's thread, click here to review:
Day 1301 of Ukraine fighting for its survival. The right to be free, speak their own language, worship in their own churches, to learn their own history.
A history of long suppression by Russia.
As war crimes grow daily, the words "never again" don't seem to apply.
Here's the🧵
Yesterday began, and ended, with Russia attacking Zaporizhzhia, injuring civilians.
Also, the head of the IAEA disgraced himself in Russia's arms, changes of 🇺🇦army leadership, and how a Russian guy was a Putin opponent, until 3 mins after being elected.
Day 1300 of Putin's war.
Another 100 days of fighting completed.
We are no nearer peace than we were 100 days ago.
Almost 200 days ago Trump demanded a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.
Not surprising as he started it, it's always Putin stopping peace.
Here's Monday's daily🧵
If you were busy over the weekend, click the link to see all Sunday's stories.
It was a day when Ukraine had to quickly repair a main railway line after a massive explosion, but they also managed to make multiple hits on Russia's rail and oil industries
Hello on Day 1298 of Russia's full invasion of its sovereign neighbour. So, only 1295 days late in fulfilling the boast of taking Kyiv in 3 days. #EATP for Putin.
I've compiled a🧵every single day without fail.
You can help my work with a boost, comment, re-post or a coffee🙏
Friday saw more important visitors arrive in Kyiv (and another familiar place is in Ukraine today).
There was more solidarity and practical support, while Russia suffered more oil woes.
I'll start in Odesa, because that's where the familiar face has turned up.
He was planning to return to Ukraine a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't make it, but now Boris is back.
Loved by nearly all Ukrainians, his early arrival (with Lord Ashcroft) meant he avoids the crowds.
Day 1297 of Russia's imperialist war, but the senior bully keeps being given a bloody nose by the junior school kid next door. How embarrassing for the "world's second greatest army" and more 'punches' thrown by Ukraine overnight..
There was so much in yesterday's thread.
Russia hitting churches, Ukraine striking a boat.
The US helping Belarus, which helps🇷🇺 & Trump questioning if the drone attack on Poland was a mistake.
Thursday ended with a Ukraine drone surge into Russia:
